Learn Ruby On Rails For Web Development: Learn Rails The Fast And Easy Way!

Love this book as a quick go to reference on doing many things over and over again. I used a sharpie and wrote my favorite pages on the cover. They are heroku p53, bootstrap p75, devise p95, scaffold p122, associations p140, imagemagick p152, paperclip p153, amazon s3 p161, Jquery masonry p174, coffee script p177, paginate p188, infinite scroll p175. I sometimes have to take a break from RoR and I always go back to this book to refresh myself on how to do certain things. Besides this book my other favorites are in order of simple to more complex: Learn ruby on rails by daniel kehoe, rails 4 in action, rails crash course, michael hartl book -ruby on rails tutorial, rails recipes, design patterns in ruby, rails 4 test prescriptions, and solid reference books of: the rails 4 way, and programming ruby-dave thomas. Its my opinion that its hard to find a roadmap on how to learn RoR as a new programmer coming from another industry so, maybe my list of books will help. And in addition jump into the IRC channel of #RubyonRails and learn by following the discussions. There are some very generous programmers that help others as long as you do your homework before asking questions and be polite.

I have been slowly learning programming over the past seven years and have learned everything I know at home. I have found that I learn best by example, either replicating someone else's work or following along with a step by step tutorial. I just assumed that Ruby on Rails was complicated but author John Elder put that assumption to rest with his awesome tutorial. Following Elder's simple instructions, I created my first RoR website and it was actually a fun exercise. Looking forward to some more advanced applications and would definitely recommend this book for beginners.

This was honestly a really informative, and good read. The author not only did a fantastic job on how to do things, but also why and how they worked. The book was detailed and can be used as both a reference for documentation, and a way to actually learn the Rails framework and the Ruby language(obviously.) The book is well written and I could not be happier with this purchase. My only problem with this book, which didn't bother me because I had it previously, was that there was no instruction on how to install Rails on your local machine. This didn't bother me much because I understood why the author did not include it (There can be many hiccups in the installation of Ruby, Rails, and the Gems.) If you're considering web development, this is a great read, and I believe that you should go for it.

I love this book, and I also joined the writers video tutorial website, while I use this book. He gives you a discount to join his website. This was the first Ruby On Rails book, that was great for a beginner like me. Provided a great foundation of what ruby and rails is really about. John Elder breaks down WHY where doing what were doing in creating the RoR website. Most instructors just throw everything at you but the kitchen sink in most books. john goes set by set, so by the end of the book you will be able to create your own RoR website. Before this book I was using my own computer to host the RoR application, installing it all on my computer was a pain. Since reading his book I found out that there are online websites that you can install all your RoR application at, in the cloud now. No more using my computer. I learned how to use GitHub, and upload my website to Heroku for free hosting. I learned what MVC is and how it relates to development of a Ruby On Rails application. Great Job !!! John Elder

Good book! If you are a beginner, then this book is for you. It shows you some very crucial things to get a nice application up and running.An experienced Rails programmer could probably get through this book in about 3 hours but that is okay. It is also a good reference for configuring some very popular gems, including: Devise, Bootstrap, Paperclip, and pagination.

So far it has mostly been helpful. I've only gotten started but that seems to be the trickest part to rails. Some negatives are: the author doesn't go into detail when it could be really helpful; he upsells his internet course on his website, multiple times, and we have barely even built anything. I understand it, being entrepreneurial myself, but come on.

Had minimal Rails knowledge befors this book. I primarily coded in PHP, but like the book said if you know basic web coding that will help along the way. This book isn't meant for the ultra beginner(although if you're starting here that's fine), and not made for the expert rails user. As it does spend sometime going over a lot of basics.

Elder's book is a step-by-step process of learning Ruby on Rails with ease! It doesn't go on tangent (although they will mention something to take out confusion) and wisp outs details that you don't necessarily need at that learning moment! I am interested in the Ruby code, but I feel as though learning the overview on Ruby on Rails may help learn the Ruby Code faster.

This book is ok. As a beginner it has been a good guide to starting Ruby and don't my first app. I am sure that the more I do, the more I will become proficient. However, I am a person who likes to know why I am doing something rather than just doing it because someone tells me to.Much of this book seems to be a bit like that because you are told what to do but not necessarily why. That will be converted later or is outside the scope of this book.I would liken it a driving instructor telling you to flick the indicator, change dien a gear and turn left. But you have no idea why you need an indicator or why you need a lower gear...The flow of the book took a bit of getting used to. In some parts it says 'type this' then 'select that'. Once you've done it the book then says 'but don't do that yet because we need to do this first. I had to get used to sometimes reading a section to make sure I didn't jump ahead. Other sections I read through then had to go back to the instructions that I should have already put in.A couple of times I hit a brick wall. For whatever reason what I did didn't work. If that didn't work I couldn't continue with any more of the book. I had to resort to good old Google to find a solution.I just hit my latest problem that I cannot solve and I have started to look elsewhere for a similar tutorial online. I have followed the instructions to the letter but cannot get the Amazon S3 upload working via Heroku. It seems that to get support I have to pay or sign up for the online course provided by the author.Don't get me wrong, for the price this book is ok to get you started and I recommend it but it can be a little tricky to follow logically.

This book would give you mostly a clear instructions to create your first Rails application and deploy it. However, you probably won't understand most of the work you did and been able reapply it by creating another app.But this may not be too bad for some. For me, as a totally beginner to web development and ROR. This book helped me to understand how would different technologies (HTML, CSS, Bootstrap,Git ,databases and Bootstrap) work together making a fully functional site. That was a big deal for me. This was also a good motivation to start ROR development as it shows me that its much simpler than I thought it would be.Latter, I started using the other tutorials from the internet which helped me adding more features to the app that I created by following this book.If you have some web development knowledge, I would highly recommend reading "The Ruby on Rails tutorial by Michael Hartl" instead of this one.
