Why does this circuit breaker have extensions on the side? Many others do not have this design.

Westinghouse Miniature Circuit Breakers are certified UL-489 which means suitable for branch circuit protection. The extended barriers are necessary for UL-489 approval. Other MCBs without the extended barriers are either NOT UL certified, or only UL approved as supplementary protectors meaning the MCB must be used with a fully rated breaker within the same panel. Applying Westinghouse MCBs will assure that your installation is utilizing fully UL approved breakers.
