The Eliminator continually works, in contrast to older electronic models we had tried.
We had tried other units operated only by batteries. Some got one rat, no multiple kills. The Eliminator can use batteries, but with the unit plugged into an AC outlet, we get kills all the time. We discovered that modern rat bait contains no real poison and is completely ineffective. So we went back to electric rat zapping in spite of our poor previous experience. The Eliminator has extra features not available before. The best feature, which is not advertised, is the included bright blue LED light on a cord that plugs into the unit. This ONLY lights after the rat is zapped and fully electrocuted. When the blue LED is flashing (and the unit is making a repeated audible chirp) we know a dead rat is in there. We then turn off the toggle switch on the unit. We use peanut butter as bait. With a small square of aluminum foil we make a dish in the bait pit to hold the peanut butter. After unplugging the power and LED cords from the housing, we dump the dead rat and bait dish. After that it is IMPERATIVE to clean and dry the BOTTOM section thoroughly to eliminate any oder a new rat could detect. We use the hot water sink sprayer without soap and a hair dryer. The electronics (located only in the top half) are NOT waterproof, so if used outdoors it is essential to have a covered location to protect the armed unit from getting wet. The small transformer that powers the unit has a bright red light when plugged in so you know power is available. We've written this review because the included directions are not very clear, particularly regarding the way the LED attachment works. It should always used, as the light on top of the unit is quite dim.

NOT HUMANE
I bought this because I currently have a rat problem in my house. I had read that these are humane because they kill the target animal pretty much instantaneously, but that is not true. I had the misfortune of being within earshot when I caught my first rat. The poor rat shrieked for at least 5 seconds! If you think that's not that much time I invite you to watch the second hand on a clock for 5 seconds and imagine the agony of 700v coursing through your body for that long. if you are looking for a humane solution to your rat problem this is not it. I've since invested in some live catch traps, and if that doesn't work I will go back to snap traps. Snap traps aren't perfect, but they are pretty reliable. The inspector from Vector control told me she sees a lot less of the problems that can occur with snap traps if you take the time to prebait them (leaving them baited but not set to snap so that the rats become comfortable eating from the traps), and learn about proper placement of the traps.

This is effective for rodents as large as gray squirrels
We have been overrun this year with chipmunks, red squirrels, and gray squirrels. They have damaged screens, woodwork, flowers, and destroyed numerous strings of outside Christmas lights. Some of the older rodents have obviously been trapped by others with Hav-A-Harts and not transported far enough away (or transported to our neighborhood). They will sniff around but not enter the trap. We purchased the Eliminator to hopefully eliminate red squirrels and chipmunks, not gray squirrels, because it has a very small opening and is only powered by 4 D batteries. But guess what? So far in about 4 weeks we have eradicated 4 field mice, 4 red squirrels, 5 chipmunks, and 6 gray squirrels. We only set it outside on days with no precipitation because it is not waterproof, and we usually get at least one critter when we do. The bait is a dob of peanut butter with a couple of split shelled peanuts on top. The gray squirrels seem to only enter when we are away from home with no outside human activity. I think they are afraid of not seeing or hearing us when their head is inside. Take the instructions seriously and clean the inside carefully after a kill. It is very easy to do. It must be completely dry to electrically initialize again. We use a hair dryer and leave it in the sun to get every bit of moisture out. Sometimes a rodent will manage to remove the bait without tripping the electronics, but it usually gets them the next time. So far, this is the best trap we have found. And not messy: the rodents look like they are sleeping.

Zaps The Rodents Dead!
This unit has humanely killed 9 rats and 7 mice over a 2 month period. A blue light flashes and an alarm goes off when it has killed a rodent. There is no mess; the carcasses are intact and always dead as a doornail. I simply turn the unit off, unplug it and tilt the unit so the rodent will slide out into a waiting plastic bag. Although I wear vinyl gloves, nothing has ever touched them during disposal. If it's a mouse, I've had to use a $ store pair of tongs to remove it by pulling it out by its tail. Am still working on the same glob of peanut butter as the unit zaps them before they ever reach it. Sliding the top half of the unit off and on for routine cleaning can be frustrating. It is a tight fit and does not slide easily. However, I'm happy to endure that inconvenience as it kills the rats effectively and keeps the mess at bay. A good purchase and I would buy it again!

Absolute crap product-see update
I have now ordered and returned three of these. They kill one mouse, very effectively I might add, then refuse to work again. I have followed all directions, cleaned them, done all the things. I even gave it the oh maybe it was defective, I'll try again. But this is #3. You might ask why I'm crazy enough to keep trying. It's because it's a great mouse trap that one time it works. It's safe for all my animals, no splatted mouse to clean up, all good things. But only once, and then never again. Edit: The actual Gideon brand one works great. Took me 3 returns to get the actual pictured version and maker.

“YAS!!!!!!” Get this thing! On second thought...
update*** Totally bummed. I have had this thing for a couple months. Worked unbelievable. Kill rate was often. Then poof nothing. No lights no kills. I had changed the batteries out and it just never powered back on. So I guess maybe it has a limit on how many times it kills stuff then it dies itself? I probably caught 15 mice/rats. Totally bummed. 1st review: ok, I am not bought and paid for. I have had this thing for three days and I live on a farm in the middle of the desert. Pack rats, mice, ground hog thingys, all kinds of critters. But, I’ve had pack rat and mice issues and they eat wires! Day three and this thing is rock n and a rollin. The only complaint I have is it doesn’t self empty. Haha. Really tho, I won’t walk out to where it is at night. It has a buzzer that lets you know it has a dead critter. It beeps all night long. My poor ducks 😬. But that’s my issue not this things issue. I can’t teatify on long term quality, but on day three it’s a 5 star. Probably 5 empties so far? I may get more of these and keep them going. Happy customer here.

It definitely works for small mice. We'll see about chipmunks and squirrels.
After parking my car in the garage I plugged in the zapper to an extension cord and placed it beside by front tire under the car. Within a few hours I got my first kill. I used bird suet in a small plastic cap and placed it in the device, it made for an easy cleanup, I just dumped out the dead mouse, detached the upper half of the device and wiped the bottom half dry. I haven't used it in cordless battery mode, you have to purchase four D batteries separately. The device comes with a short two prong detachable plug with a red light so that you know you have AC power. The device has an off/on switch and a detachable short cord with a blue light on the end. This is so you can put the device in a hidden area and still be able see the flashing light indicating the trap has been triggered. There is also a audible alarm that sounds and continues to beep until the power is turned off. So you have 3 indicators, a green light that turns on when the trap is set, a blue flashing light if you have the detachable ligh cord plugged in and an audible alarm that beeps. A red light blinks every 10 seconds to indicate that the device is active and working. If the device is wet or not properly connected it will give you an error red/green flash every few seconds. This zapper is not rated for outdoor use when there is a chance of rain or blowing/melting snow getting into the unit. Modify for outdoor use at your own risk. I'm tempted, but we will see how well it holds up in my garage with my melting snow under the vehicle.

Updated after some use.
So, heres the problem, the trap stops working because of the piss the mice leave behind, even thought I cleaned it after every mouse it ended up rusting inside and now they dont work. Mice go in and out no problem. I bought three and now Ive spent a bunch of money for something that no longer works. When you open it its easy to load bait and clean. You have to clean it after you catch a mouse. I use a wipe and let it dry. Ive used snap traps, the bucket and lots of others. for me this is the best. no blood and guts, and just keeps on catching 9 mice since my order, im back to order two more.
