Is the part in the middle supposed to spin? If so, why?

The middle part is supposed to spin, one direction only. Based on the instructions to use this it's my understanding that the single-direction spin is what gives the yo-yo the speed. When the cord runs in the direction that the center does not spin it causes the yo-yo to increase in rotation speed, then when the cord runs in the direction that the center does spin it relies on the center motion and does not affect the blue part's (as in the picture here) motion. I guess you could relate it to a ratchet action wrench. I hope this helps.

When my Flight Pro's axle is exactly centered on the string (spinning or not), it always leans towards the "white" side. Is it defective?

A leaning diabolo is a common issue for players who are still learning. There are quite a few good YouTube videos that explain how to adjust your sticks when a diabolo leans in one direction or the other. There is a video called Diabolo 101 by Britney Cheng on YouTube that demonstrates how to correct a lean while you are playing.

How long is the string?

The string is 72 inches, approximately. You can adjust it to make it shorter. It also includes an extra string that is the same length.

Does the black or white side face you?

If you are left handed than the white side will be nearest to you. If you are right handed than the black side should be closest to you.
