Providing pilots with the required knowledge to earn a certificate and learn the aerodynamic theory associated with airplane flight, this book is a key reference tool for passing the FAA Knowledge Exam and Practical Test (checkride) and all the information necessary for operating an aircraft. It includes a history of flight, a discussion of the role of the FAA, the criteria for earning the various pilot certificates, how to select a flight school and instructor, and the tests associated with earning a pilot certificate. Subjects covered include aircraft structure and systems, principles and aerodynamics of flight, flight controls and flight instruments, weight and balance, performance, weather theory, airport operations, and much more. Written by the FAA for the pilot preparing for a Sport, Private, Commercial, or Flight Instructor pilot certificate, this handbook introduces pilots to the broad spectrum of knowledge needed as they progress through pilot training. Review: Invaluable resource for the student pilot - Go paper on this one. - Invaluable resource for the student pilot. Sure you can download for free, but this book is one that the student pilot will want to have in hard copy. Color charts and diagrams are invaluable. I just got my sport pilot's license. As well as being a great resource, this book helped me prepare for the knowledge exam, and the oral. I also got a hard copy of the 2016 FAR/AIM. Most other resources were adequate in digital format. Review: Great book - I've been a pilot now for over 10 years and thousands of flight hours, but still have to take a look at the basics from time to time. This is a great book to show student pilots and beginners interested in flight about the fundamentals.

Good
Great information, easy to understand. It seems that a resource devoted to something as exacting as aviation would have better proofing and fewer typos. That aside, it is well organized and follows a logical flow.

Definitely a must have text for any pilot
This is one of those texts that you definately need to have in hard copy form. An ebook version just won't do but it's good to have it in your electronic flight bag as well. Since it is filled with tables and lots of graphics it is much easier to use this foundational reference in hardcopy form. It is a large text that is also best viewed in color so if you are considering just printing it in black and white the odds are that won't suffice. Well worth the few bucks to have it and definately worth the price.

The Series is Great
Great information. I bought the series to gain more knowledge about planes. This book is geared to future mechanics and goes into much detail. I enjoyed learning of the little details that go into pane design. Good series of books!

Must have for your aviation library
What a great book, it is hard to believe that it is a government publication! As a CFI I use this as the core curriculum for my students, they can download it free from the FAA or get this hard copy very reasonably.

Good content and presentation
Well written, practical, and a good aid in learning to fly. I like the way the information is presented; it takes the reader from the general to the specific and provides enough theory for understanding without being too technical. I am a better student pilot now.

Most of the flight instructors I know recommend it, and if nothing else
Whatever you think of the content or writing style, every pilot should have a copy of this book. Most of the flight instructors I know recommend it, and if nothing else, it's referenced in numerous other FAA publications, including the Practical Test Standards. It's so popular, you can even mention the "PHAK" and most pilots would know what you're talking about. The problem is in knowing *which* copy of the book you want. If you're okay reading electronically, then keep in mind that the most current version of this book is available at the FAA web site. As I write this, the 2016 version is online - well ahead of what most of the printed versions are shipping (it has a different cover). Plus, you can download the FAA version free anytime you like, and if you prefer, you can even read it in Kindle (or any other PDF viewer). I suppose if you're a masochist, you could even print the PDF. If you don't like the idea of electronic books, then the challenge is mostly about how to get an up-to-date printed version. Unfortunately, I ordered a printed copy and received the 2008 version, and the most current version I've seen in many online stores is the 2013 version. I don't know what they're actually shipping, but Sporty's web site also shows the 2008 version. As other reviewers point out, certain older versions are full of errors, so be careful. Point is, if the FAA thought it worth spending taxpayer dollars to create a 2016 update, I think that's the version I want to be reading. Otherwise, no arguments about the content or the layout of the book...just be sure you're not getting something with outdated information.
