It's advertised as unsmoked. However, keep in mind that this does not mean that no PAH are present. Even unsmoked mate tea has been shown to contain highly carcinogenic substances. Most mate teas have also been shown to contain high levels of Anthraquinone that has been shown to be carcinogenic in animal studies and is most likely carcinogenic for humans. None of it should be consumed if present.

I open and pour into a quart jar. Then the brick should become soft. If it doesn’t then I would return it. But you have to open the package.
