Update 10/21/2014: All lights are still going strong after 5 more months. One is used constantly, and batteries are still good. We'll see how long they last under heavy use... Update 5/20/2014: I moved to a house that's over 100 years old and none of the closets have lights (heck, none of the bedrooms have lights). Anyway, the closets are very dark. I've purchased a few more of these now and have monitored the battery usage. When monitoring movement and not lit, it only uses 60uA or 1.44mAh per day. When the LED is on, it uses 360mA for 30 seconds (or longer if there's movement). As it's drawing 360mA when lit, alkaline batteries will be able to provide about 6000mAh. Alkaline batteries *can* provide 8000mAh, but only with a much lower load (around 25mA). In other words, for each 30 seconds the LED is on, it uses 3mAh of power, so it can be triggered 2,000 times on one set of good alkaline batteries. I've found that it gets triggered about 6 times a day or around 3 minutes total. That means that each day it uses 18mAh for the LED and 1.44mAh for the movement sensor for a total of 19.44mAh per day. What does all this mean? It means that a set of good alkaline batteries lasts (6000 / 19.44 = 308 days) or around 10 months. Some last longer as they're not used as often, but 10 months is about the average in our house. This is really good battery usage for such a bright light, and it is PLENTY bright. Hope this helps! Original review: My daughter's closet is dark so it's hard to see her clothes when getting ready for school before the sun comes up. I looked around at a few different models and this one stands out because of the low battery usage and bright light. It works perfect. Easily detects when she enters the closet, stays lit while looking for clothes, and turns off when she leaves. It's also bright enough to see everything and the spread of the light is wide enough to light the entire closet. Can't really say anything bad about it. And the price is great as well. You can't go wrong with this.

WORKS GREAT - BUT NOT ANYMORE - UPDATED 2/2/14 & 7/17/15
I've installed these for about 30 days. I have one in 3 closets, and one in the attic above the pull down attic steps. Before I had to use a flashlight, and that was a "PAIN". These units use 4 C size batteries, and I am thinking that they should last a while with LED bulbs. They function fine, and each location does NOT have an ambient light problem. These lights are very bright and the pool of light is MORE than adequate for the space that needs to be illuminated. I know some reviewers had problems, mainly they seem to stop working after a while. We will see ... as time goes on, I will update as needed. For now, I am very happy with these units. UPDATE: 02/02/14 About a month ago, 2 of the 4 lights I installed, went bad. The same problem that everyone else complained about, 2 (the most used) lights simply stayed on for about a day and a half until the batteries died. I really liked these, but they seem to have a year lifetime on them. The 2 that are used rarely are still working fine (Attic and seldom used closet). Since these were a bit expensive, I am going to replace them with much cheaper motion led lights. Buying expensive ones did nothing but cost more for "junk". I brought the 5 stars down to 2 stars, as these appear to be "disposable" lights WITH ABOUT 1 YEAR OF USE ON THEM. UPDATE: 07/17/15 After getting the comment from the company, I emailed them and received a reply that as the batteries ran down, the light would function erratically. Since when the lights stayed on, it still appeared very bright, I assumed the unit was acting up and not batteries.. Luckily, I did NOT throw out the lights. I put new batteries in both "bad" units, and they started to work as normal. I will update again after a few months to see if they stay fixed.

*almost* Perfect. See suggestions
Let me start off by saying I really like this product, and I will probably buy another for a different application. My current application is in a shower that had little lighting and was pretty dark before I bought this light. I needed something relatively cheap and easy to install. This fits the bill on all of those fronts. Install was easy. What I did not like was the fact that the light has a "feature" that disables the light from working if there is light in the setting that it is in. So for my application of low light, the light would not engage when motion was detected. Before purchasing this product, I read a review of a user that had the same problem and solved it with a small piece of electrical tape. I did the same thing and covered up the light sensor (not the larger motion sensor next to it on the board), and voila - it worked fine. As for the amount of light it puts out- it is perfect. Lights up the shower just fine and is actually in my opinion quite pleasant. One subject that other reviews have not mentioned (at least that I have read) is how this operates in regards to the timer. I was worried that the timer would give out after 30 seconds and I would have the light turning on and off many times during my shower. I have yet to have this happen once. when I move the shower curtain open, the light instantly turns on - I don't even think about it now. I will try to post how long my batteries hold up - my hope is that they last for years, not months. That said I will list a few suggestions to the manufacturer and pros and cons Suggestions (why this did not get 5 stars) - The ambient light function. I get why the feature is there, but you should leave the consumer the choice to have it on or off. So adding a switch for this function would be great so I don't have to disassemble the entire light and apply a band aid fix. Its sloppy. - A selector switch to increase the duration of the light be on ie 30 seconds a minute 5 minutes and so on - another MASSIVE improvement that could be made is in the power department. Integrating a li-ion battery and charging mechanism would make this absolutely perfect. The cost of 4 C batteries is a significant consideration and a li-ion option would be great for extended use without paying a ton for batteries. Pros: Great amount of light Sensitive motion sensor Easy install LED should extend the replacement time of the batteries as it consumes low amounts of power Cons: Cost of 4 C batteries to run the light (9 dollars for duracell ultras almost doubles the actual cost of the setup) Ambient light sensor (no switch) had to resort to using electrical tape

AMAZING! Used during power outage..
I purchased this product to use in my closet since it is often dark and hard to tell my clothes apart. This item came fast and just in time for Hurricane Sandy. I set up the light in my closet and it was easy to install. For temporary use, I just placed on a ledge in my closet and it works just how I wanted. The motion sensor is great. When I open the door it automatically turns on and turns off within a few seconds when I close the door to prevent battery drainage. Since I live in NJ, we were unfortunately hit with Hurricane Sandy and without power for 8 days. I used this light to navigate around my house. My mom and I placed this light in the hallway for night time for light if we had to go to the bathroom. It worked great! It lights up an entire room without having to find it and turn it on. We used this light consecutively for a few days and it still going strong. Now that we have power back, it resumed its original purpose in my closet. We are going to purchase a few extra just to have on hand. Thanks Mr. Beams and amazon!! Amazing product!!

Company replaced defective unit, and has been great for 2 years and counting
Update: The company sent a replacement, and this thing works great now. It also holds the battery power for a long time. This sat in its box for a few weeks. Then a week ago we finally put it up high under our portico facing our front door. We were so excited that this bright light lit up our porch at night. When we forgot to leave the outdoor lights on, it provided great light for delivery folks or to help us see to open our door. It worked great that first week, turning on with movement as needed. Then exactly one week after we installed it, we noticed in the evening that it was on ALL THE TIME! We installed the best new batteries correctly, there is no ambient light, there is no movement to set off the motion detector. Just like all the other 1-star reviews, it began to stay on all the time. Actually it turns off for about a half second every now and then. So this is now useless because we cannot keep climbing a ladder and running through batteries. I'm only giving it the extra star because it was so good while it worked. Now it sucks. I'm going to get an electrical light with motion detector instead.

Let there be light!
I went back and forth over the Mr. Beams for months before I actually bought it. I hate LED lights but we rent, and I didn't want to install something permanent in the ceiling of our unlit pantry. So, I gave in and bought it. It takes C batteries, which I had to make a special trip for, but that isn't a huge deal. It was however, quite a feat to climb a ladder backwards and install a light in the ceiling of a pantry with the top of the door right where my arms needed to be. After a little contortionist action, I was able to screw the attachment plate into the ceiling. Then, it was only a matter of lining up the tiny brackets to twist on the main light portion. This took a few minutes and while I was frustrated and foaming at the mouth trying to get it installed I am relatively pleased with the final product. The light turns on when I open the pantry door and turns off a short while after I close the door. It gives off enough light to illuminate the items in the pantry and doesn't blind me (unless of course you stare at it directly... so, don't do that). There is a small part of me that wishes I had ordered 2 as our pantry is rather long and the beam of light isn't terribly wide. But, after the aforementioned foaming at the mouth, I think I would have probably given up and not installed the second one after the first one went up. Perhaps it would have been easier to install with an power tool. I think this works well for people who rent, but if you own I suggest biting the bullet and have a real light installed (preferably one with the motion sensing light feature, which is pretty cool). Also, keep in mind that this doesn't light a very large area. The images they show of the area it illuminates are pretty accurate.

junk
Update: the replacement shipped to me in spring of 2011 just died. It was installed in a linen closet where the door is opened and the motion sensor triggered every day at least once a day. So that's over five years of use which seems pretty good to me for a $20 light. The batteries last a long time in my installation, I'd say about two years for each set of Duracell alkaline's. I'll buy another one of these lights. Worked great for about 3 months then died. Appeared the motion sensor failed and caused the light to stay on constantly. No response from vendor for replacement. Update: the manufacturer saw my review and immediately responded with an offer to replace the defective light at their expense, shipping today. This is superior customer service and I'm actually glad to get a replacement. As I noted above, the product works very well as a closet light. It's bright, the motion sensor turns the light on when the door is opened (I have it mounted on the ceiling) and it doesn't turn the light on in the afternoon light when it isn't needed. The light uses "C" batteries so battery replacement should be infrequent. All in all, a pretty good product if it will just work. I have high hopes. Will give it five stars if the replacement lasts longer than 3 months.

Great lighting solution.
Bought one of these, so impressed bought 2 more the next week. Responsive, pleasant [not blinding] light, easily installed. I put one over a gate and the other two under a porch and am surprised at how much fumbling for switches or looking for flashlights I no longer have to do, and it saves time unloading the car at night. I considered the larger Mr Beams lamps, but these work perfectly and seem somehow more comfortable than larger/brighter lights would have been. Mounted at about 9' height, they cast a slightly oblong illumination field of about 6 1/2 feet radius, not quite bright enough to comfortably read by but more than bright enough to navigate by. 15-pound cat doesn't set them off, 40-pound dog does. The only bad news is that they make it hard to sneak out of the house at night. Not for me, of course; for the dog.

Perfect for small closet
I bought this for a small hall closet I turned into a pantry about 4 ft wide and 3 feet deep. With the shelves and all the pantry items it gets a little dark and hard to see some items. It is a bit of a pain to turn on the ceiling lights around this pantry just to grab something out. I found this light installed it in less than 15 minutes and it works great. The light is bright - some may feel it is harsh as it is a focused cone of light (smooth reflector) but it does the trick it lights up once I open the pantry door and stays lit as long as I am moving around under the sensor. if I do happen to have the hall lights on it is bright enough that this light's sensor does not activate the light. It is easy to change the batteries in it when necessary just twist it of the base and change the batteries and put it back in.

A brilliant light in both senses of the word
The low-set keyhole of my front door mortice lock is in deep shadow in my porchway at night. I'd been meaning to put a light in for years, but getting an electrician or doing wiring yourself is such a hassle, for something small. Voila, white LED's solved my problem. I will, for about the third time in an Amazon review, draw people's attention to the three brilliant Japanese scientists whose work led to these gadgets and a well-deserved Nobel Prize. Credit is also due to the engineers who eventually made the white LED mass produceable and affordable. It's good to include the designers at Mr. Beams for praise too. This is a brilliant light (in both senses) and while a little expensive, it's much cheaper, again, than getting in an electrician. The light solves my problem with the keyhole perfectly, and indeed illuminates the whole (small) porch more than adequately. Be careful to place it, as I did, carefully so the shadow of your own body blocks the light as little as possible, if like me you are concerned about a particular feature such as a keyhole. However, the general feeling of cheer, to have a dark enclosed porch illuminated on your arrival, is also good in itself. The light does not seem to come on unnecessarily often ... my porch has no door of its own, and is about 15 feet from people passing on the pavement. Also, the light switches off quickly when nearby motion ceases, in particular when I close the door. The only small criticism: the supplied screws are not fantastic, so be prepared to have some better screws ready if you end up chewing the heads with a power screwdriver as I did. Or just be particularly careful. Very glad I bought this in time for winter. The instructions are good, and apart from the debatable screws, assembly and fitting is easy. The plastic is rather good quality and should be durable in an outdoor position, but protected from rain and the worst of winds, as in my case. I don't think it's intended for full outdoor use and am not sure it would be 100% waterproof ... but that's not the brief here, just letting people know. As noted in the product description, it doesn't come with batteries, and I am trying 4x C-cell "hybrid" NiMH rechargeables. If I get a chance, I will report on the battery life I get.
