Honest Review from an experienced fish owner
I decided to introduce a Betta sorority in my biggest tank, and had an aggressive female who attacked and killed other fish. I only had a 1 gallon to keep her in, I didn't have a money to spend on a lot of equipment, and I didn't really have room for anymore aquariums. I grabbed one of these from Amazon Warehouse at a steal, and as somewhat knowledgeable aquarium owner I wanted to give my impressions. Filter Pump Noise Level: Probably the biggest thing on everyone's mind concerning this purchase. Let me assure you it is absolutely silent with very low agitation. I have 4 different sized filter pumps and this is the most quiet, albeit smallest one. There is absolutely no friggin' way for your fish to get sucked into it, the water inlet hole is about as big as a lead pencil. It has just enough movement to circulate the water through a very small charcoal filter. You don't even so much as hear water trickling because there is very little movement. The Tetra Whisper 3i is a hang on the inside style filter, and the impeller snaps onto the bottom of the reservoir, so there are no hoses. The trick is everything needs to fit together snug and tight, you really have to force the impeller housing onto the end of the reservoir to get a good fit. There is also a clip to attach so you can hang it on the aquarium and you really have to push in tight so it's stable. I adjusted it to the tallest height setting and filled the water level to the appropriate height in my pictures. If you look at them you can see I added a piece of rubber drawer liner to the clip to act as a vibration dampener. It also says in the instruction manual that you can order suction cups if you have a problem with the clip for some reason. Design: I really like the sleek, minimalist style. It looks cool, and is a functional piece of art that is perfect for an office, or bedroom. The plastic is crystal clear, but it is plastic so there is the potential for scratches if those bother you. Features: I got exactly what I needed: a complete aquarium in a small form factor, with a quiet pump, and an LED light. You really should get a small aquarium heater and an AC light timer A) for your convenience and B) for the fish to have a consistent light schedule. A cheap $5 rotary style is all you really need. The LED light and pump are both two prong, non-grounded AC plugs. Other things you will need you may not be thinking of: Don't waste money on fake plants, real ones are cheaper and they help clear and oxygenate the water. You need a 5lb bag of aquarium substrate, extra filters, some kind of a hiding spot for your fish, liquid aquarium bacteria, water dechlorinator, and a gravel vacuum. You really should give your aquarium time to properly cycle and clarify before adding a fish, but I didn't really have a choice this time so I used plant clippings, rocks, and decorations from other tanks and lots of bacteria starter. You need to do a 25% water change every week and check your filters frequently.

Very cool little hobby tank
This is a very cute little tank. It’s small but it’s enough for a little betta and I put in a sucker fish. I read all of the reviews and I agree that the instructions aren’t very clear but if you’re planning on using it for a single betta fish and don’t plan on using the bubbles it’s perfect. It’s not noisy either if you have the settings on low which you should do for this kinda set up. If you’re looking for something with multiple fish then this isn’t the tank for you. I also agree that this isn’t one gallon. If you want something for more fish than you should get a bigger tank than this one. But for myself I just wanted a little hobby tank and for me this is how small I wanted it to be. This would be perfect to have on your desk or nightstand. I’m also happy with the lid on this. It allows for the equipment to have its opening and it also has a little feeding hole in the middle so you don’t have to open the lid to feed your fish. Plus the fish can’t jump out either.

Impressed so far
For the price, I wasn't expecting the sun and the moon, and after reading other reviews I went in expecting the filter to be pretty sub-par. I had been shopping around for a more ideal aquarium for my betta that was in a shape I liked in a 3 gallon range, and didn't see many options. I was a little concerned getting the tank shipped and possibly cracking, but it arrived perfectly fine. It was in a box in a box :) I just got it set up and I am pleased so far. I like the size- its just right for me! I feel much happier having my betta in a 3 gal tank rather than a 1 gal, and I think he agrees. I really like the cube shape, and that the edges are rounded. Feeling it, you can tell its cheap plastic, but the look of it is nice, particularly in the dark with the light on. It looks like a glass tank. I imagine the main difficulty will be in treating it gently to keep it scratch-free. I was also able to carry it from the kitchen to my room with it mostly full though its a little heavy. The bottom base is also cheap plastic which is not flat across the bottom which makes carrying a little awkward, but it held up fine. The light seems quite nice, I appreciate there is a on/off switch on it (my other tank came with a light that did not have one.) The filter works ok as far as I can tell- there was nothing in the way of pictures or instructions, but it was only a few pieces and I figured it out. I wasn't sure how high it needed to be placed compared to the water line, I may fiddle with that more later. The current seems like it may be a little strong but just around where the water dumps in, but I can see if I can modify that or just get a different filter- it seems like there are other good options that aren't very expensive. I have no idea which way you are supposed to face the filter, or if that even matters. I'm guessing probably not. As for noise, it makes a soft buzz and some light water/bubble noise. It does bubble up at the back which can kind of push against the lid making a clacking noise as it moves up and down. It seems like you can kind of feel out an ideal height to minimize noise and current. I have mine placed so the spout is around 3/4 inch above the water line. Several people had commented it is easy to drop the lid in the bowl. I've been careful so far and have not had a problem. I actually kinda like how tightly the lid rests against the top. I also really like that there is a small feeding hole, and at the back sections cut out for the light and filter, so you shouldn't have to take the lid off very often. The filter area is big enough you can substitute most any small filter if you prefer a different one. I think the lid is a great shape to be practical, and tries to be an unobtrusive as possible. I don't like the tanks that have the huge hood on them. I would recommend people consider this setup primarily for the tank and light, which I think its still a decent deal price-wise. I'm considering looking into adding a ghost shrimp or mystery snail now that I have a little more space. UPDATE: I've had the tank about 5 days now. After some messing with the filter, the current still seems stronger than the betta likes. I've seen him swim under it, and it pushes him down. He seemed kind of restless too, or rests on plants oddly. Someone at the pet store just suggested to tie a knot in the tube- I ended up kinking it and tieing it with a twist-tie, and that has worked wonderfully. I've cut the output rate by about half. I would say just be careful not to cut it back too much, or if the water level goes down it will stop coming out at all. As for the filter's effectiveness, I don't really know if its doing much or not, but at least its aerating the water. With my tank setup there shouldn't be a really high level of waste. I may still go with a better filter in the long run, the one recommended by another post seems really good and not expensive, but this one seems sufficient for now. My tank now also has a ghost shrimp and a blue mystery snail. There was some dissent with the betta at first, but now they seem to be getting along for the most part. I was surprised, the ghost shrimp really held his own- I picked a fairly large one, but figured if the betta wanted to he could still take him apart. The betta has been poking at him occasionally, but no harm done. I added some more plants which really helped since the ghost shrimp hides unseen by the betta most of the time. I would recommend these companions for the tank- it is really too small to consider other fish. Depending on your betta's personality and level of aggression, it may not get along with the shrimp, but it may so you just have to try with the knowledge the shrimp may not make it. I wouldn't want more than 1-2 shrimp in there so he's not feeling stressed seeing them all the time. So I'd say don't go overboard. You also shouldn't get more than 1 snail for this size tank. If you do decide to add companions, particularly with the shrimp make sure there is enough plants and other places for him to hide so he doesn't constantly have to contend with the betta. If you want to ensure the best care for the snail, do something to make sure there is good enough calcium levels for him. This can be as simple as putting in a cuttlefish bone, some seashells, or adding some calcium supplement to the water. I actually took a bit of screen and cut it to fit on the bottom of the lid to prevent possible snail escape. I don't know how necessary this is since it'd probably be hard for him to get up past the filter and there isn't that much open area on the lid, but I figure better safe than sorry. The tank is a little cloudy now, but I was experimenting with foods for the shrimp and snail, and they weren't eating the algae wafer right away. I know generally they eat scraps, but there's not much scrap with just one betta if its food he likes. My betta seems a lot more active now than he was in the old 1 gal bowl. While larger tanks are always preferable, this seems like a great size if you don't want to go too big.

Betta Batchelor Pads!
Lovely little tank. Bought 2 for 2 Bettas and they look pretty happy in these 3 gallon. Taking the advise of the other user and not going to attempt the pump that comes with the unit. I knew this going in so I have what I was expecting. An inexpensive plastic tank that looks expensive.👍🏼 Tetra does make this super inexpensive 10 gallon filter we picked up at walmart and its kicking the butt out of the fluval spec 5 filter. I think we may pick another one up if we feel the need for a filter in this tank. I received the tanks in a box within a box which was delivered in the shipping box. So they arrived prestine out of the packaging. The lights are hreat if you have plants that need some light. The room they are in are well lit so we can see the goings on within the tanks from the kitchen & the family room. The tanks have a small enough foot print that allows for the tanks to sit in the designated space. (No the bettas cannot see each other) I can see why moving the tanks around too much can cause breakage. They do seem a tad fragile ; will siphon to clean to avoid a lot of movement. Over all super happy. I gave 5 stars because I knew the filter with this tank would not be used, great price, I like Tetra products, it fit my chowen decor and space AND I love that you can have a completely unobstructed view of your fish. Amazon was also very cool and sent me a picture of the delivery so I knew exactly where to find my box when I got home! Thank you Amazon!

Better than many...3 plus stars
This tank is a cut above others in the size and price range. It looks nice, not so much like a childs toy, and the lid has pre-cut sections that allow for a different or additional filter, which you may want to consider. The included filter is a Whisper 3i, a tiny air driven internal. It actually functions fairly well as a low maintenance mechanical and bio-filter if you replace the floss/carbon "cartridge" with a permanent piece of sponge that is simply rinsed out in tank water regularly. The filter must be situated with the outflow at or above the surface. The hidged top to the filter may or may not stay on, it isn't needed so chuck it if it comes off or you will constantly find it floating in the tank. The included air pump is sufficient to run the filter, but is not strong- even adding certain types of check valves may be too much for it. Plan on situating it above the water level. There is space cut out of the plastic lid that allows for a small HOB if you want more filtration. The tank itself is a lightweight cube on a black plastic base. The small size limits your choice of inhabitants, but a single male Betta will do well. Two or three male guppies can be gorgeous. Female guppies get larger and if you do mix sexes the males will constantly harass the females and the tank is a bit small to allow them to hide or evade the attention. A couple dwarf frogs, a dwarf crayfish, or ornamental shrimp are other options. Small fish such as tetras or danios need to be in groups and are highly reactive making them better suited to larger tanks. There is ample room for a small heater for a Betta or other tropical. The acrylic/styrene scratches very easily so algae removal or gravel vacs need to be performed with great care. Gravel is optional, most consider it essential but in most cases it is not. Bare bottom tanks are easier to maintain and can be beautifully decorated with bogwood, plants, rock, and/or dried oak or Indian almond leaves. The LED light fixture is just OK. It isn't particularly bright, and doesn't bring out a fish's colors very well. For even low light plants it isn't really bright enough, but very few small tank kits have good lighting. All in all this is a good buy. For the price you get a nice looking little tank, plenty big enough for a Betta. Ignore internet experts declaring "Bettas need a minimum of 5 gallons" ... it's unsubstantiated nonsense, and merely someones personal opinion, or someone regurgitating someones elses personal opinion. Common sense should tell any sane person that keeping a live fish in a neon colored 4 inch plastic box is moronic even if it does say "for Bettas" on the package. This tank is perfectly suitable however. All Bettas, especially if kept in small aquariums should be regularly exercised in some way, they simply don't get enough left on their own. Brief sessions with a mirror (10 minutes or so) once or twice a day is good for them and doesn't "stress them out" as some claim. Displaying and chasing off rival males is a normal part of being a Betta. It is also believed the main cause of premature death in pet Bettas is related to overfeeding combined with a lack of exercise. A mirror can be simply placed against the outside of the tank, there is no need to put one actually in tank.

IF YOU ENJOY MAKING YOUR TANK UNIQUE, I DO NOT RECOMMEND. Bubbles Are Too Strong & Tank Is Too Small
I don't mean to go all Karen here, but anybody purchasing this should be aware of the size + what it comes with, the space and issues of decorating, and their fishs strength. I was so excited for this fish tank. I currently have 6 tanks set up, and one extra out. I absolutely loved this tank when it arrived . . . . However, my fish did not. •The Tank •The Filter •The Bubbles •The Tubes •The overall The tank itself was fine, but all of the things were too much. It was just overly simple to where it's complicated. Personally, I enjoy having the freedom of decorating my tank, and placing the plants, the toys, all of that. So my main problem was how limited everything was. The filter took up so much space, and on top of that, the tubes connecting to it were worse. First, the filter. The filter took up most swimming space, as it was in the back center, just as the lid allows. It looked uncomfortable for my fish as he didn't have much room to swim. Second, the bubbles and air pump and airstone. No. Just no. Again, took up so much space. To keep the bubbles and air pump suction cupped to the bottom of the tank, I also had to put a bunch of rocks around the top. I couldn't place it in the center, and Thank God I didn't. My fish would have gone flying out. Which leads to the next problem inconvenience inconvenience. The Bubbles are far too strong for the tank. They also don't have adjusting settings. NOW MY MAIN ISSUE : THE TUBES. So, there was also The Airline Connector Valve. The Valve connected two tubes : one tube connecting to the airstone, one tube connecting to the filter. The Filter will not work if it is not connected with a tube to The Airline Connector Valve, connected to the Air Pump. ON TOP OF THAT, the other tubes connected to it as well. Long complaint, shortly put, a simple cord filter would do, and a cord airstone, that would do too. In total, there were 2 tubes going straight up through the top of the tank, and a wire cord, that controlled the lights on the pump. The Air Pump Also could only run the filter and the airstone as long as both aren't full speed power at once. The Air Pump Also had to be perfectly balanced in order to not fall over and vibrate against whatever it falls on. It's just a hastle. Overall, this tank left 0 room for decorating, 0 room for swimming room, not a powerful filter, and not a powerful airstone which still can take out the fish. It didn't even have any other room for a heater, which is more necessary than a filter too. If you're a beginner, I would not reccomend this and if you're not a beginner, I still would not reccomend this. I personally think it's all so over complicated. It's just limited.

perfect for a snail tank
i did have to use a youtube video and scratch my head for about 30 minutes to figure out that the little valves on the adapter open and close to adjust the airflow for the filter&airstone because there are no instructions. the airstone does light up but as you can see in the second photo you can barely see it so i did buy the light separately. i think it’s a good size for a snail tank but definitely not suitable for fish!

Quality product
This fish tank is perfect for a Betta fish or other small fish. The first one I ordered came with a cracked lid, but after I contacted the seller, they immediately sent me a completely new tank.

Looks great and the fish seems happy!
Bought this tank for a betta fish. It looks fantastic in my room and is nice and spacious for my fish. The filter it comes with is quite loud for a bedroom, so instead of using it I’m doing frequent water changes. The tank was a little bit scratched, but as there is no real “front side” you can just put the scratched sides facing a wall where they won’t be noticed. However, once the water is in the tank it’s hard to notice at all. The LED light is wonderful and really showcases off the tank. If you are getting this for your fish, just make sure that a room light is on (or just a naturally bright room) as well as the LED, as if my room is dark and only the LED is on my fish gets stressed out by his reflection. Overall, this tank is highly worth it and I would recommend to anyone! Shipping was also very fast.

Unusual fish tanks
These tanks are a unusual shape, which I like. The plastic seems a bit flimsy but only time will tell if that’s a problem. I am very happy with everything else.
