Review: Strongly recommend for preppers, too. Excellent foundation to start with, is basically a full course on its own - I'm not any kind of medical person, I'm coming at this from a prepper's standpoint of being prepared, with an admitted interest in historical knowledge that's been supplanted by technology that doesn't always fully address the given issue, or may cause other side issues. It's a rather small font size, so not that easy for me to read, but I've been very impressed so far. The forewords and prefaces give a good idea of the direction the whole is going to take. That is, pretty much a straight reference book. It takes the time to introduce you to some differences in herb use and principles, which I appreciated a great deal. I haven't yet come across anything like a story, like "my grandmother used to..." type thing, just straight info. Cited trials and their results, etc. As you may have realized, I haven't finished this yet. I wouldn't normally review anything this early, but it's going to take me a year to get through this all, with a lot of rereading. It doesn't have very many reviews, but I'm convinced this is a serious tool that will be very useful to those interested. It's very nearly a course in itself. It gives an excellent foundation to start you off, which helps to better understand the rest of the information in the book. I would definitely recommend this to preppers, not just students/practitioners. I wish they put it into 2 books itโs quite hard to pick up and read. Definitely worth having in your home collection.

This is a great book for those who love science and the traditional herbal approach
I love this book!! I have a biology degree and was first acquainted with Simon Mills at Bastyr University years ago where his Essential Book of Herbal Medicine was required in the first botanical medicine class. He is trained in medical science and phytotherapy. This book honors the thinking behind traditional approaches in herbal medicine and highlights modern scientific evidence of its relevance. It cites studies and acknowledges the limitations of in vitro studies. It talks about synergistic effects and bioavailability of the herb in the tissue it is needed to affect. It talks about approaches to fever management, when diaphoretics are useful and when cayenne is useful. It talks about dosing and which form of the herb is most effective. It talks about traditional approaches, like supporting the immune system and the respiratory system as well as taking anti-virals for example. I haven't gotten through all of the herbal monographs yet, it is a book that takes time to digest, but is so engrossing for those who love evidence and the holistic approach. This book also talks about harmful alkaloids and interactions with herbs and drugs/ mineral uptake, etc. It is the definitive herbal textbook in my opinion and I look forward to many more hours studying its pages. In many years of research in the subject, I have not found a better book.

but after diving into the text this is one of the best textbooks I have ever owned
Initially very intimidating with small fonts and large amounts of information, but after diving into the text this is one of the best textbooks I have ever owned! Authors are skillful in presenting relevant information in a clear format, and being able to discuss topics in depth but understandable. Senior at the University of Minnesota.... Best textbook I have ever studied from.

Essential Herbal Reference
This is an exceptional clinical text that covers traditional herbal medicine. It is full of useful information and expert guidance on herbalism as practiced in the modern British tradition. The easy-to-use reference offers very well organized content: Part One provides an overview, including principles of herbal treatment; Part Two contains practical clinical guides; and Part Three contains the monographs of 50 important therapeutic herbs: its materia medica. These monographs for each herb contain comprehensive reviews that provide clear scientific explanations for the actions of that herb, along with details of traditional uses of each plant, with scientific references. The therapeutics sections reflect traditional approaches to herbal medicine, once again with references to studies and trials. This is an essential reference for holistic practitioners, and others interested in herbal medicine. Sadly, it is poorly bound and must be used with great care to prevent the book from falling apart. That's the reason I gave it four stars instead of five.

Outstanding book, highly recommended
This herbal medicine book is by Kerry Bone, so what more is there to say? I'm a naturopathic student in my final year. I wish I had such a book when I started the course... it has taken my knowledge and understanding of herbs to new heights. When I was doing my clinicals, my supervisor always taught me to use "specifics", i.e., prescribe specific herbs for a particular condition, ex., hypericum for depression, withania and rhodiola for stress, crataeva for kidney stones, crataegus for cardiovascular problems like hypertension, thymus and inula for bronchitis, silybum for cirrhosis or other liver problems, etc. This book is congruent with my clinical supervisor's herbal treatment approach and reasoning for using certain herbs. It was actually her that suggested I buy this book. This book compliments another book: "Clinical Naturopathy: an evidenced-based guide to practice" by Jerome Sarris and Joh Wardle. They work well together in understanding what herbs (based on scientific research and clinical experience) are best for X condition. This book has been a great investment into my education and learning of herbs. Highly recommended, especially for students or practitioners.

His passion and love for herbs shines through with his writings
Absolutely the only book of its kind out there with research, case studies, and every detail about herbs that you can possibly have in one book. I also have it on my iPad my Note 7 (kindle) and my Mac air because I use the research and studies daily for my research. As a doctor of acupuncture and Oriental medicine, licensed herbalist, and clinical nutritionist I see Kerry Bone as the number one Western herbalists in the world for all that he is contributed to us herbalists. His passion and love for herbs shines through with his writings. Carrie explains in detail everything he can possibly know about the herbs chosen so there's nothing left to be learned. It is more of a textbook than just a regular book for the layperson. I own over 200 books and this is my go to books for herbs.

Excellent book for the serious herbalist. Delves into many complex topics offering great explanations on how each herb works as well as thorough descriptions of the phytochemistry, body systems and accompanying herbs, and so much more. All this with the research and references listed.
