My Grandma took care of me when I was a child and to this day I look to elders for companionship and wisdom. And I am in my seventies! Most young people today do not think this way. The way of life of the Native Americans was recognized too late as being beneficial to humans and environment alike. We now know that we are destroying our beautiful earth and the simple explanations of the customs of the natives in Mr. Eastman's book bring that realization ever sharper. It is a very easy and enjoyable read. Of course we need progress, and Ohiyesa's father realized this when he sent the little boy to school. It was wonderful to read how he tried so very hard to help his people after he was educated. I would recommend this book to all. Review: Identity through cultural lifeways - An intimate look at what being raised as a Dakota boy to manhood really was about in the 19th century. Eastman was fortunate to be able to learn the old ways, values, teachings and ceremonies in a very structured process from esteemed elders and teachers who passed down knowledge from generations of experience. A must read for understanding the cultural upbringing of the Dakota People.

Impressed with attention to children of tribe.
I was impressed with the attention given to educating the Indian children in the ways of the tribe and their customs. I really enjoy first person accounts - everyone's life is an adventure especially if it differs from your experiences.

Print is too tiny!
This is a fascinating book. I'm greatly enjoying reading it except for one thing. The print is just way too small. I don't understand why self-publishers are always using this super small print. I'd happily pay more for more pages to enable larger print. It really reduces the enjoyment of reading. That said, the content is wonderful, with so much information on the childhood of Native Americans in the sadly lost past.

Eye opener to another culture so far yet so close......
Fascinating story I came across while researching my lineage. Chapter 5 has the most exciting description of a late 1809’s lacrosse game! This is youth- oriented.

Classic childhood read
Much smaller than the hardcover I read as a child. Great, true, story.

An interesting insight into a native American upbringing
I enjoyed reading the memories of a young Indian upbringing, There is clearly a lot to learn from respecting nature and living off the land.
