It quickly hones any properly sharpened knife to a fine edge it is easy to clean and use. The handle is surprisingly soft, yet firm and textured. The design is simple.

Originally, I wanted a short honing steel for sharpening my two pocket knives at the end of the day. I bought this hoping that it would be 10" overall, not just 10" for the steel itself. When it arrived and was much longer than anticipated, I was going to send it back. However, after trying it out, I am actually quite happy with the size. I don't use the whole steel, but I use most of it - more than six inches, anyway. It really cleans up the edge, so I can treat the knives once or twice a week to keep them sharp without constantly losing material off the blade. It doesn't put that nice mirror-finish of the edge, but it gets it more than sharp enough to handle common utility tasks. Would recommend for sharpening pocket knives.

Just invested in two Victorinox kitchen knives having switched to a ketogenic diet where I literally cook all my own food. (Adios McDonalds & Burger King) My 20 year old inexpensive knife set was suddenly exposed as not being up to the stay sharp for more than 10 minutes test. Victorinox knives I researched had high end performance & quality without having to take out loans for Japanese cutlery. They were so much sharper and fun to use than my old butcher block loaded with hacksaws, I was inspired to baby them in their magnificent cutting abilities. The honing steel in my 20 yr old set was smooth in the middle from my ignorance in trying to sharpen my knives with it for years. It was useless. 5 YouTube videos later about the purpose and usage of a steel really enlightened me. I purchased a very highly rated knife sharpener here in Amazon then researched the difference and purpose of a Honing Steel. Honing steels don't sharpen, they hone. If knives were cars, sharpening would be the car wash. Honing would be the fine wax job that preserves your sparkly shine and finish. For upscale cutting utensils, honing maintains maximum effective cutting angle and sharpness. I suppose most steels are pretty much alike, but I'll never know because I went with the guys renowned for fine cutlery and this is their baby.

This Victorinox Honing Steel does a great job. The metal is made in Switzerland and its quality is highly apparent. The Fibrox handle is my favorite type of handle, as it is extremely easy to hold onto even when wet. The handle is not as smooth and shiny as the product photo indicates, but at the same time it is not quite as "rough" as the Fibrox handle on my Victorinox knives. It's important to remember that a honing steel will not sharpen a dull knife. Rather, its purpose is to re-align the edge on an already sharpened knife. Before using a knife, I give it three gentle passes on each side along this honing steel. This not only helps the knife to cut better immediately, but if helps the knife to hold its edge longer. I am highly satisfied with this steel. If you don't like the Fibrox handle, I strongly suggest that you still shop for Victorinox products with wood handles.

If you know the brand, you'll know that they don't make low quality items, this is no exception. Perfect addition to your knife drawer to keep your kitchen knives good and sharp.
