what is the total width of the 12 pack strands?

It is about 4 1/2" to 6" wide. About every 10/ to 12" along the strand of ivy there are no leaves for 3 inches. I would recommend doubling up on your strands if you need it bushy. For my project which was using the vine climbing a tree I was able to use just one strand at a time. It did have an odor but I put it outside for a day to air it and the odor has not returned. Hope this helps you.

If you want them to be as close together as in the image, how many feet do they cover? I want to get enough to serve as a 10' long backdrop

To be as close together like the picture you need to put them an inch apart so the 12 vines covers a foot across

Can i use it outdoors?

Yes you can definitely use it outdoors. If you plan on using it outdoors for months at a time I imagine the sun would fade them over time.
