Very fine umbrella, but lousy installation structions
This is a beautiful, well-made umbrella. We got it to replace a 10 x 10 canopy whose frame was destroyed in a windy thunderstorm -- the fourth such canopy we had over the years. We finally decided we needed a different method to shade our patio and keep the western sun out of our eyes while eating dinner on the patio. We didn't want to go with a permanently covered patio (which would block much-needed sun in the winter). So we decided that this large, maneuverable umbrella would be a very good alternative solution. It looks like we made an excellent choice. I can't yet comment on the umbrella's durability since we just got it, but it looks well-constructed enough that it's built to last quite some time. Years, I hope. (Given the price, that will be nice!) The frame is sturdy, the mechanisms for raising it and tilting it seem equally hardy, and the waterproof fabric is thick and, well ... waterproof! But I have one serious beef. This took MUCH longer to put together than it should have because the instructions are really lacking. As you know, the water tank base (which you DO NEED) must be bought separately, and there' a separate instruction booklet (2 pages) that comes with that. However, nowhere in either the umbrella instructions or the water/sand tank instructions does it tell you anything about how you need to position the tanks. Or whether it's best to try to fill them after you've set up the umbrella or before. The proper positioning of the tanks allows the foot pedal that control the umbrella tilt to operate. But at first glance it's hard to tell how those tanks should be positioned. (I filled them first, and put them as near the umbrella base a possible, but they're very heavy, so moving them takes strength-- particularly if you're a woman, and an older woman, as I am. I did position them wrongly, initially, so had to backtrack and partly unscrew the umbrella base in order to get them back out of position and turn them 45 degrees, and re-lift them into their new position. Secondly, the umbrella cross base parts (which fit into the water tank slots) don't look anything like pictured, so I at first thought they were missing. Fortunately, they were not. Also, the instructions for matching holes in several parts of the vertical posts are ambiguous, as there are many more holes than just the two they imply. Had I known all this ahead of time I could have cut the installation time by at least half. It would also have been very helpful for some instructions regarding how to position the umbrella. That may seem like a no-brainer, but it's difficult to tell ahead of time who the actual very heavy umbrella with its mechanisms, etc., is going to be positioned on the base pole so that it faces like you want it to. Moving it after the fact is almost impossible for one person, and difficult even with two. This CAN be put together by one person -- except for the final lifting of the umbrella itself, sliding it's pole onto the pole on the base. The nine-foot umbrella with all its hardware is amazingly heavy (and top heavy, which creates instability when lifting it). You have to lift it a good four feet to get it onto the base pole, so to do that it takes either one very strong person (with upper body/arm strength), or two people (which they recommend).

Great Quality Shade At A Reasonable Price
For months, I had compared several cantilever umbrella shades online and finally decided to go with Purple Leaf for the following reasons: 1. The geometry and the color/finish of the pole seem to be much more contemporary/modern than most brands. It is devoid of unnecessary decorations/details. 2. The company offers its product internationally but has a headquarter in the US. It offers a variety of yard furniture. This is not just some Chinese importer with a US warehouse. 3. The branding of the product is quite acceptable. The logo is subtle enough. 4. It offers a dark grey color with a dark grey umbrella structure. I found most color combinations accentuate the umbrella's structure in an unwanted way that simply adds a ton of visual clutter and distraction from your garden. 5. When checking out the base options on Purple Leaf's website, one could find many different types - including in-ground and flush mount types. The company is serious about offering products that work for most customers. To provide shade for my 5'x5' table, I ordered a 9'x9' umbrella, which is giant, with a water-filled wheelbase. The instruction is clear. The setup took less than an hour. I am 5'-2" and have no problem operating the tilt and the 360-degree rotation. The product is solid. I had a small issue with the finish on the pole due to the pole being handled when the paint was still tender in the factory. The Purple Leaf team took care of it. The customer service was superb. If a cantilever umbrella is what you need (I had to make sure the plants that need full sun won't be shaded, thus flexibility was a key factor), look no further. Be sure to head to Purple Leaf's website which offers more options than you can imagine.

outstanding umbrella and customer service
I recently purchased the Purrple Leaf 9’ x 11.5’ umbrella, and it has exceeded my expectations in quality, style, and customer service. The canopy fabric is thick and durable, the stitching is clean, and the frame feels solid yet easy to maneuver. The elegant design and generous shade coverage give my patio a true resort feel. When I first received it, there was a small defect in the fabric. I contacted the seller, and they immediately responded — offering me a partial refund for the inconvenience and sending a replacement canopy fabric at no extra cost. Their professionalism and quick action really impressed me and gave me even more confidence in my purchase. Between the premium materials, smooth operation, stylish look, and outstanding customer support, this umbrella is well worth the investment. Highly recommended!

High quality easy to rotate/tilt umbrella & wind stable with matching sand+water base.
Extremely happy with this purchase as well as seller's pro-active and super-helpful Customer Support. I bought the PURPLE LEAF 8 Feet Patio Umbrella Outdoor Cantilever Square Umbrella Aluminum Offset Umbrella with 360-degree Rotation in Navy Blue. The umbrella itself is square when open, 8 feet by 8 feet (thus at 64 square feet, it can become a wind sail capable of moving a yacht). Since it does come with a large metal cross-base designed for sand+water weights, I purchased PURPLE LEAF Patio Umbrella Base SBL4090 Water &Sand Filled Weighted Base. My finding is that both items are indeed designed to work perfectly when combined, and I would guess up to about the 10ft by 10ft model, but not beyond - if you go beyond that, ask seller for a based that can be bolted into a concrete or deck frame base because wind has more power than you would think. I happened to order just as tariffs hit for low cost items and base shipment was delayed. Customer Support pro-actively contacted me and shipped a replacement just in case. They were awesome. Assembly instructions are super clear. The bases take about 1.3 cubic feet (about 35 liters) of paver setting sand plus water. Use a small gardening hand shovel to fill and keep lifting from he filler hole side to move sand to opposite end. When about half full, add water with hose on shower mode, but only enough to where it mostly gets absorbed (sand sets and hardens a bit, allowing you to continue fill. Once close to 2-3 inches from filling hole, add more water to where it just sits barely above sand. Then keep adding sand and pressing it sideways with your fingers away from hole. This managed to fill both base halfs to the brink, safely. Bases have an indent on each of far sides to lift a bit and rotate, and thats how they can get back onto the base. It is not very successful filling with the bases already installed over bottom cross because you would not be able to fill them completely. In the end, they weigh nearly 300 pounds and the umbrella is rock solid in 20 mph ocean wind gusts. Do close the umbrella beyond that wind speed as common sense dictates. Wind resistance is unexpectedly good and umbrella shakes a bit and in strong wind but does not budge.

Umbrella tips over even with low winds and 300 lb sand base
UPDATE: Purple Leaf sent a new umbrella to replace the 9ft one that tipped over. I traded it down to an 8ft umbrella because I felt the smaller size might hold up better with the base size I had already purchased with the 9ft one that tipped - it is already filled with 300 lbs of sand and I don’t want to change it. The rep told me he thought the 9ft one tipped because I should have added water on top of the 300 lb sand, he said sand alone is not good enough. It didn’t say that in the base’s manual and they had recommended this base size for the 9ft. In any case, I now I put water into the base along with the 300lbs of sand - let’s see if it holds the 8ft umbrella. If you are getting 9ft +, I recommend you get a larger base than the one they are recommending here for the 9ft+, it’s a bit too small. Purple Leaf does sell a larger size but is more expensive. I’m glad I traded down to the 8ft model because this one is made better than the 9ft one. The fabric is thicker and sturdier and the way fabric is attached to the arm is more sophisticated. The rep had told me that the 8ft model I came out more recently, so my guess is it’s an upgraded model. Apparently they upgrade their design each year in response to customer feedback, so I guess that means you’d better get lucky and not get old stock. Note that the replacement umbrella came badly packed with scratches on the poles and a broken pedal cover, but they sent me a new pedal cover quickly so all good. They need better packing and QC though. I’ve read several reviews here complaining about broken parts from bad shipment. In terms of wind factor, this particular model is not good with wind. The umbrella rattles when wind is around 8mph. I won’t open it when gusts are over 14mph. The rep told me it can withstand up till 20mph, but I would be nervous to have it open at 20mph. If you live in a windy area, Purple Leaf has a more expensive wind proof model that is around $500. All in all, the customer service was responsive and resolved all problems and it’s a well made and good looking product for the price. I had some issues with it and it doesn’t hold up to wind as much as I would have liked, but I like that they stand by their product. And the really durable commercial grade umbrellas are super expensive. The trade off with this one was worth it for me. PREVIOUS: I was happy with this purchase when it arrived, but I had it now for only as week. The handle was shaking so badly when wind was around 14mph so I contacted Purple Leaf rep. She told me that it was normal and that umbrella should stand up to 20mph wind. I was being careful and didn't open umbrella again until today, when wind is a 4-6mph, with 15mph gusts. But even without too much wind the umbrella tipped over. I purchased the required base for it and filled it with 300lbs of sand. How can it just tip over like that so easily? Now the arm is broken.

High Quality, fantastic customer support!
I have a new deck, and wanted a large shade umbrella to go with it. There are a lot of choices to choose from, but Purple Leaf seemed like they had a better quality product. But they are expensive. So, I had a choice to make. I looked over the other comparable choices, but figured, if I was going to spend a good bit of money on a decent umbrella, I might as well spend a little more, and go for the Purple Leaf. There was a problem with the delivery. A hole was torn through the box, which was the delivery company’s fault. I decided not to open the box. Because, from what I could see, through the hole in the box, made be believe they sent the wrong color umbrella. So, I sent them an email explaining my problem and they responded to me the same day! I asked if I could return the umbrella for the correct color. They asked me if I would be willing to keep the umbrella, and in exchange, they would send the color canvas I wanted, and return 10% of my purchase. As the box is really large, this was the perfect solution. And it was a relief to not have to drag it to FedEx, or arraign a pick up. The umbrella’s setup is pretty easy, but you might want some help, as it is a bit weighty. The quality is first rate, all the materials are well made, and sturdy. And of course, it looks terrific. When spending a lot on money on a product that’s perfect, everything’s wonderful. But, if you do run into problems, as I did, then it becomes such a relief knowing that the company you bought from is there to help. And the people a Purple Leaf are top notch! I can’t say enough about them! Thank you Purple Leaf people, I’ll be sure to buy from you again!

Great Umbrella and customer Service from Purple Leaf
This is a great umbrella (Gray 8' Square offset Cantilever), setting up was simple and it operates smoothly and with little effort. Gray Color matched what I expected from the pictures when purchasing. It's an umbrella and will catch the wind - Recommend getting the base and keeping it down when not using it. The end cap holding the umbrella tight became damaged shortly after installing (after tipping - and realizing I need a weighted base). I inquired about a replacement from customer service. They were prompt, and after verifying model, quickly sent me a replacement end cap which was easily installed - old one was difficult to remove but ended up just pushing it further up the arm to get around this. Good as new. So far it is holding up to the AZ summer sun.
