Any idea how to get this switch to support 1280x1024 on ubuntu? it will only give me 1024x768. xrandr errors when i try to add 1280x1024 on the switch

Accepted Answer

There are two factors you need to consider:
(1) Screen resolution
(2) Refresh rate
The two above must be met by the switch box; mechanical switch box cannot cope with high resolution beyond 800x600.  The distributive capacitance along all lines usually degrades the signals. Nick.

Question 2

My monitor is now lists as "generic" in the display functions window. Is there a way to get it to recognize my Samsung monitor?

Accepted Answer

Your computer is recognizing the switch, not the monitor. If you switch supports the same resolution as you monitor you can go into Device Manager, Update Driver, and Browse your computer to locate and install the correct driver for your monitor. If there's a problem with the display afterwards you can roll the driver back. You might have to plug your monitor directly into your computer to do that.

Question 3

Need vga connection between 1 desktop and 2 screens: monitor (4:3) and television (16:9). will this allow switching without display issues?

Accepted Answer

It should work. One PC two monitors. this is a switch so only one will display at a time. Also depending on what the TV can handle resolution may not change automatically. Hope that helps.

Question 4

Any way to avoid the plug and play problem when using 2 monitors? PP senses the switch, not a monitor, so it defaults to generic, poor resolution.

Accepted Answer

PP software senses the Sync signal in the connection between the monitor and the graphic card.  The distributive capacitance of the mechanical switch degrades the integrity of the Sync signal; so the depicted picture suffers.  Nick.
