Can a hair brush fit in the bottom?

No, unless it’s a hairbrush for a Barbie doll. The case is very small.

Is the top supposed to stay up on its own to use the mirror?

No. The top must be completely open and laying flat on the surface of the table for you to use the section with the mirror.

Is it durable enough to put in you luggage?

To pack in a suitcase, yes. But I wouldn't send it on its own.
