Hello,This can occur if the gauge goes through altitude changes during shipping. On the top of the gauge there is a black plastic nipple that needs to be cut in order to regulate the pressure inside the gauge with the outside atmosphere. There should be a sticker on the gauge next to the nipple showing how to cut it as well.Sincerely,ScottHFS

Mine need refilling. Is it oil or glycerine used to damp the reading?

Usually they are filled with glycerine. Don't forget to leave a small bubble at the top for thermal expansion (or you will have leaks).

What's the difference between mpt and npt?

Npt is national pipe thread, a specific taper. Mpt is male pipe thread, fit is female pipe thread.
