Would this work to mask my coworkers cologne?

possibly but it would depend on where you place the sponge and how close your coworker is to your work area. The Air Sponge does have a slight but pleasant smell and the closer you are to the product but I think it might overcome the cologne. You could put the sponge on top of your desk or behind you nearby or under your desk depending on the strength of results you need. It's a semi-solid cake so it will stay in one piece and not spill or spread.

Is this really the "unscented" version? It smells heavily of a soap-like scent when I opened it.

My containers don't say "unscented," but the odor is not what I'd call soap-like. It dissipates after leaving open for a few minutes. I love the way it takes nasty odors out of a room and leaves behind a very subtle fresh scent.

Do you take the lid off completely?

Yes, I take the lid off completely. You may be able to open it half way or just slightly crack it open to make it last longer but I only use in in my car and small rooms so I just open it all the way.

When it is melt, could I return it??

I don't know about melting but this is the best air cleaning system I have found for soaking up odors in any location. I always put one under the car seat n one in the closets, one in the cupboards with the trash cans. Put them out and then forget about odors for a very long time.
