I recently tried this Uni-ball gel pen and it has quickly become one of my go-to writing tools. Here’s how it stacks up. ✅ What I liked • Smooth, reliable ink flow: The ink lays down dark, crisp lines with very little effort. One reviewer said the ink “lays down clear dark lines with every motion.”  • Minimal skipping / interruption: For many types of paper I’ve used, it writes without hesitation—no major skips or gaps in the line. (Although some users do note skipping on lower-quality paper)  • Comfortable barrel & design: The pen has a good balance, a comfortable size and shape, and doesn’t feel cheap or overly lightweight. The “One” series for Uni-ball is described as “a perfect length and diameter… comfortable for longer writing sessions.”  • Quick drying & less smearing: Especially helpful if you’re left-handed or write quickly—less chance of smudge after writing. One review: “great choice if you’re looking for a super smooth writing experience… but the smudging issue holds back perfection.”  • Good value: For the performance I got, I felt the price was reasonable. It’s nice when a pen does more than the basics. ⚠️ Areas that could be better • Paper dependence: On cheaper or very slick paper, some users mention skipping or inconsistent flow. As one Reddit user put it: “The Uni ONE is a nice pen … but the refill is a let down on reliability. It does skip on the type of cheap paper pad I use.”  • Tip/point size & color limitations: Some of the finer tip sizes or lighter colors (in certain series) are less bold or harder to read. If you’re using extremely cheap paper, or you need the absolute finest tip for ultra-detailed drawing, you might want to check whether the specific variant meets those needs. But for general use, it hits the mark. I’m keeping it in my rotation and will likely buy another in a different color or tip size. ⸻ If you like, I can also write a shorter “quick review” version (1-2 sentences) or a version tailored for a specific use case (e.g., for left-handed writers, for bullet journaling, etc.). After a lot of trial and error and I have spent $$$, ONE is the most reliable gel pen I used. Moreover, I ordered a lot of refills as the refills are mostly universal. It's smooth on many different papers and it has almost no skip and it's clean. Minimal smear with highlight marker. Passed rubbing alcohol test and it's safe to write on check. The satisfaction has my experiments paid off and I recommended to everybody I know.

I will be honest and say that I have not written with this pen much as of late, as I recently switched to what I would consider this pens ballpoint counterpart, the Jetstream RT (you can check my review of that if you are interested in ballpoint pens). As for the Uni-Ball One Black Retractable Gel pen, I will start off by saying that I have primarily used Pilot G2 pens probably since they came out, and within the last few years added TUL. One of the biggest problems that I have with both the TUL and the G2 is the smudging. It just takes too long for the ink to soak in to the surface or dry. The Uni-Ball One Black does NOT have that problem. I am not sure of the exact science behind what they have done with their One-Ink, but it is quick to dry to most paper. Overall, this pen is just comfortable and feels solid in the hand. I like the size of the barrel, and the clip may look as though it will be flimsy, but it is constructed well. The price is very reasonable, and the color...if you want your ink to be the blackest of blacks, this is your pen! Once they get the color spectrum that TUL has, I will likely make the full switch to Uni-Ball. Keep up the great work!

I do like these pens overall, but I've had an issue with ink skipping. The pens do still have a rich black color, and the ink dries faster than any other 0.7 pen I've used.

I love this pen so much that I go out of my way to find reasons to use it. I wasn’t sure I was going to like it at first but it’s actually perfect for my writing preferences. It has a slim body, comfortable grip, smooth and quick drying gel, with a precise fine-point nib. The pen feels light weight and sleek. I haven’t had any trouble with it skipping ink or fading out while writing. I also have no problems with my writing smearing (right handed). But just a word of advice, if you’re going to use a highlighter over your ink, then let the ink dry really well first. Whenever I highlight the ink before it dries it will definitely smear BUT when I properly let the ink dry first, then it’s perfect, no smearing! I’ve been using 1 pen EVERYDAY (out of a pack of 5) and so far it’s lasted me a LONG time. I still have 90% of the ink left in just my first pen. I consider this Uniball One pen to be both great quality and good long term use. I will absolutely buy them again in the future. I might consider trying out some of the other ink colors as well.

Very thick dark ink, smooth, decent grip, good size and a very nice looking pen. My complaint is that im on my third pen of these and they have ALL skipped. I can hardly write a full sentence without the pen skipping.

Best pens ever!!! If your want a bold gel pen this is the one!

This is a go to pen for me, extremely smooth to write with and a good quality product.

Those are my all time favorite pens! They dry super fast, perfect for lefties.
