The jack handle is the release no reposition necessary. Simply start to unscrew the handle. You can regulate speed by how much you unscrew the handle. Just crack it and it will go down slow.

can this be used for trailers in the field?

Depends on soil compaction. Depends on trailer loaded or not. If you carry some very stout wood or steel plate to put on the ground under the Jack, might work for changing a tire. I probably would carry 2 jack stands with stout wood or steel plate underneath as safety items under the frame so that if the soil begins to sink under the weight of the trailer, you can get your happy ass out of the way...and redo your Jack and supports.
