Can this pump be installed up side down?

you probably can as long as you have the clearance and make sure to hook up the inlet and exit correctly , you may want to check with the manufacturer of this pump.

What is the diference between the aluminium and the cas iron pump?

Aluminum material is softer then the cast iron

what is the recommended inlet hose size

I have 2 pumps. a 21 gallon the hose adapter was for 1.25 inch . the pump was too large for the equipment so I replaced that pump with a 7.5 gallon pump and continued to use the 1.25 inch hose.

When it specifies the material as aluminum for the center section, the end plates are still cast iron correct?

Yes. Example: HC-pto-1A is cast front and back, with Aluminum center. A HC-PTO-1AC is all cast iron.
