She writes (or co-writes) mainly good lyrics. Her albums have become way too commercial and overproduced. I want her to grow up to be like Stevie Knicks, but we have 20 years to find out if she will mature musically, or take the money and retire young.In the meantime, we have what is probably the most artistic recording from this era of Taylor's life. And it was not recorded by her.I don't care what Ryan Adams' intentions were. It could be a joke. He might hate Swift. He might be trying to impress her. Or her young fans (ew). He might be showing his fans that he really is okay doing covers now (ever since he gave into covering Bryan Adams's Summer of 69).Here's what makes his cover album great: he channels Bruce Springsteen (think Nebraska and Born In The USA). His version of Shake It Off sounds like I'm on Fire. On Style, he takes what could be the best track on Taylor's album, and turns into a sultry number with some smooth role reversals. And on All You Had To Do Was Stay, he knocks one out of the park, making it more listenable and catchy than Taylor's original version. His Out Of Woods is haunting. Wildest Dreams matches his alt-country style quite well. On This Love, which should have been the final song on Swift's album (it certainly sounds like a closer), he does a good job keeping it quiet and intimate at a piano. And he sincerely tries on the unsalvageable Welcome To New York.Along with Doveman's cover of the Footloose soundtrack, Ryan Adams' 1989 is a surprising little gift from the music gods. Why did Swift authorize this? Did anyone know her fans would buy it in droves? And like it? Who cares. It happened. Against my better judgement, I have come to also love Taylor Swift--and at her best, I think she is a very fine song writer. I also really love it when talented people cover really good songs in an original manner. When I heard that Ryan was covering 1989 as if he were covering Nebraska by Springsteen, I knew I wanted a listen. Damn if he didn't knock it out of the park. He is in awesome voice, and his instrumentation is neither spare nor overbearing....it really is like he treated all of these songs like his own children, this album can easily stand up to anything that Ryan has done on his own (and that says a lot) and is a viable alternative to Tay's own outstanding effort. His version of Blank space is naked, painful, a paean to loneliness. Style becomes a funky, punky strut. Shake it off starts with a greasy organ and a rim shot and soon becomes a romp through a haunting nightmare of misunderstanding and isolation. Amazing. When the pedal steel kicks in...I got chills. Listen, if you love Tay and are not scared to see how her songs stand up to reinterpretation, you will love this with good reason. If you love Ryan, yiu will go nuts for this bad boy, heart on the sleeve love letter to some great songwriting. Nonstop awesome. Check it out, give it to your friends. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4.0 out of 5 stars Where my music and my daughter's collide *by J***Y on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on September 25, 2015* Still not sure of his intentions here and I'd have loved to see Adam's energy put into another new album of his own songs, but its good music. Ironically for pop, many of the songs sound like they Could have been written by Adams. There is also the connection in that Swift and her writers are mining her public ups and down for material, many--especially the downs--of which Adams shared when he was young and bumbling along.My eight year old daughter is a Swift fan and while I'm not a pop music fan, I'll admit I like this stuff as I heard my daughter play it. Adam's cover of it has created a music connection between us, each sharing our favorite artist with the other, although my daughter doesn't know what to think of the Adams covers, and may not like the idea of me infringing on her territory.It's certainly an odd project, and I'm sure a little tongue in cheek, but it seems sincere and the result is good. I have one minor complaint: On some of the tracks most of them, actually, there is too much echo and distortion in the vocals. Sounds almost like it was recorded in a shower stall.
