Review: A very good topper. - Okay, first of all, the topper does have a distinct smell to it when you open it up. But it did go away after the 72 hours that is suggested. I got this specific topper because of the price, and I looked into several different options, and this one really peaked the cost/risk ratio. But in the end, this topper turned out to be exceptionally well. It was a fantastic addition to my bed. I even bought an additional one for my guest bed. It is a very comfortable topper. But for those who purchase this item in hopes to alleviate (and even cure) back pain, do not get your hopes up. This is not a miracle product and if you have back pain, do not search for a cheap fix. Go see a doctor. But if you feel that your bed isn't the most comfortable bed you've slept on, please consider this product. It is inexpensive and feels amazing to sleep on. Review: Best Mattress Topper Review! No. Really! - With a title like this, many people might think that this is a product plug by someonone within the Foamex company. This is not true. I am a consumer who was frustrated by my bed and pillow top and I bought this Foamex on a whim. If any of you have read my other reviews, I am hyper critical. I am especially critical about beds and bedding. This back story starts with my purchase of a queen size Duxiana bed more than 10 years ago. As many of you know Duxiana is a luxury mattress company with premium pricing. Duxiana touts using all natural materials including latex. What Duxiana doesn't tell you is that latex is a rubber based product and it breaks down over time. After just a few years with my Duxiana mattress, the latex in the bed and in the pillow top turned yellow and brittle. Then it disintegrated. I had to throw away the latex pillow top and I refuse to spend another $1200 for another Duxiana pillow top that will meet the same fate. I bought the .com name, "Duxianasucks.com", and I eventually want to start a blog about the poor quality of Duxiana mattresses. So that's the back story. After I threw away my pillow top from Duxiana, I bought a $250 3 inch memory foam mattress pad from Garnet Hill. It was luxurious and nice but the 3 inch memory foam was just too thick for me. Another issue I had with this pad on top of my already thick bed is that this combination was too thick for my sheets (the foam is also encased in a soft cover which adds to the thickness). On top of this (another "dis" against Duxiana) is that the standard queen size Garnet Hill memory foam pad didn't fit my custom queen size mattress. Duxiana mattresses are not standard industry sizes. (I remember being in a Duxiana store and overhearing a conversation between a customer and employee where the employee refused to take back the mattress because it didn't fit the customers bedframe.) In the end, my Garnet Hill mattress pad did not fit my Duxiana mattress and the pad was too thick. So out with the Garnet Hill topper... ... and in with the Foamex 1.5" topper! When I unwrapped the Foamex topper, I discovered that I could stretch it to fit over my custom size Duxiana mattress perfectly. I also have a mattress protector. (I love to drink wine in bed and I need to protect my entire mattress from accidental spills.) I put my mattress protector over the Foamex topper and my sheets fit over both perfectly. The best part is that when I sleep on this memory foam, it is neither too soft nor too hard. It is perfect! I don't feel any desire to have a thicker mattress topper. I am 6 feet tall and weigh 165 pounds and I don't feel like the thickness of this pad bottoms out. It conforms into the small of my back but I don't sink into it. Really, 1 1/2 inches is the perfect thickness. In fact, this feels better than the $1200 mattress pad from Duxiana. The best part? This is dirt cheap. I never bought into the whole idea of "cool" memory foam. With my mattress protector sealing the top of the memory foam I don't notice a difference anyway. Just one last tidbit about the photos here. The color balance for this product is off. This mattress topper isn't blueish but a very pale warm white. I am sure the color will change and yellow over time due to oxidation. No matter. In the future, when this mattress topper gives out, I will purchase the exact same one. Kudos to Foamex! On an end note, I have thought about bed mattresses to no end. For me, the best mattress is an inner spring mattress with a memory foam top pad. Thanks to Foamex, I now have to top pad that I can rely on. Now if I can only get rid of my Duxiana and buy a Shifman, my sleep world would be closer to heaven.

Good enough
I bought this 1.5 inch pad because my mattress (5 years old) which I bought when I moved here but wasn't sure how long I would stay, is not super-great. I wanted a somewhat softer surface. Since I live in "rural" Alaska, a new mattress was $$$$$ so I thought I'd get a pad w/ free shipping and see if it helped. I also wanted a pad that would fit under my current mattress pad and sheets. My choice was limited by what would free-ship to Alaska (more restricted than free-shipping to the lower 48. When I received this 1 1/2 inch pad, I was taken aback - it was wound up in a package so tightly some parts were compressed to less than half an inch. It had creases and seams in it from the folding and rolling. I unrolled it (with some effort since it had to be unpeeled carefully as it was so compressed that parts were sticking to each other). So I mentally composed my letter complaining about it, believing that there was no way on Earth that it could uncompress or that those seams would disappear, and left it alone. Three hours later I came back and it had totally uncompressed and relaxed! Every part was 1 1/2 inch as advertised and there were no visible seams! It was a miracle! I ended up with a 1 1/2 inch pad, perfectly fitted to my Queen size mattress. It is easily compressed but recovers 100%. It does compress easily (but recovers). I "hit bottom" on it when sitting up in bed or lying on my side when my hip "hits bottom". But it does provide more cushion so my shoulder, and probably hips but to a lesser extent, are more cushioned. I seem to be sleeping more restfully since it is more comfy when I toss and turn. So - not perfect, but reminiscent of "padded" mattresses - and worth it for the price for me (including free shipping to "rural" Alaska). So I give it 4 stars because based on the price etc. I really didn't expect more. It didn't quote a foam rating so maybe those who can get better values shipped to other states might fare better, but this works as a mattress pad to enhance my current mattress. Oh - and it did have a slight "chemical smell" like a household cleaner when first unwrapped. It is slowly disappearing (I have to bury my nose in it to smell it after the first few days).

Better than I expected!
I ordered this mattress topper to put on my hard-as-a-rock futon mattress in my guest bedroom. My mattress alone is nearly impossible to sleep on, but this topper makes it much softer and more comfortable. I wouldn't mind sleeping on this mattress now! I decided to purchase this particular topper because of the other positive reviews and its reasonable price and I am not disappointed. For its thickness (mine measures exactly 1.5 inches thick) it really improves the feel of my mattress by a large factor. It had a bit of a chemical smell when I unwrapped it but I let it sit all rolled out for a few hours and I hardly notice it now. When I press my hand into the topper, it holds the shape for a moment before puffing back out, but it puffs out more quickly than the brand name memory foam mattresses that they advertise on tv. This does not matter to me but I thought I'd include this detail if it matters so someone else. What matters most to me is this thing has really improved the comfort of my guest mattress. I would gladly purchase this mattress topper again and would recommend it to anyone.

this thing is awesome!
ONe more thing...if you get this item...use it in COMBINATION with the " Hotel Collection Bedding, 500 Thread Count Extra Deep Cotton Mattress Pads" you can get this at Macys. This combination RULES - you will think you bought a tempur-pedic! Update: I have bought a KING SIZE for my own bed now, and I have bought 2 more queen sized ones for two other guest beds because after sleeping on the king for so long and then trying out one of our guest beds (super high quality mattress by the way), I found my back started hurting again after one night WITHOUT IT, so ordered more for the guest beds...once you've tried this - you won't go back. The good thing I feel is -it isn't so plush that you sink in too far or get too hot or even realize it's there...it is MORE LIKE YOU HAVE A REALLY GREAT MATTRESS ALL OF A SUDDEN A+++ getting them for all 6 beds! Can't live without it. People tell us that they feel they are sleeping in 1200 thread count... it's really the plushness feeling of the bed itself! ----------------------------------------------------- I ordered this for a FULL sleeper sofa - we have a bed and breakfast and the sleeper sofa was an extra item we added when someone wanted to put more people in the suite (I have to provide really high quality items - that is the expectation of guests) - I fully expected it to have a strong chemical smell - after reading all the reviews and determining for the money this was the best buy dollar-wise - I purchased it. It came beautifully packaged, clean, tightly packed, new and fresh. I took it out and was careful unwrapping or unrolling it (if you have ever baked pies, think of being delicate like unrolling a firm dough - not wet) - I layed it over the couch and over the back to air it out as recommended and so it could swell up to it's full potential. Within about 20 minutes it had already begun the process. To be quite honest, I did not mind the smell and it really was not very strong at all! After two days (48 hours) of leaving it like that I couldn't smell any smell, I had to go over and stick my nose into it to smell the very faint smell left. After the 3rd day it is nice and thick and the smell is totally gone! AND truthfully to me the smell didn't smell bad at all, sort of like a new chinese food box-container. Anyway I snuck this thing onto our own bed (KING SIZE) just to try it out...I was so impressed with it I wanted to try it. I LOVE THE THING and have immediately ordered a KING SIZED version for my husband and myself as well. So...impressed - this thing is AWESOME! love it!

After 6 months - 4" diameter black spots on topper
I bought the Foamex Aerus Natural 1.5" queen topper in late January. It is now early August. I use a waterproof mattress pad over the topper since I have old cats who have hairballs. I was changing out the mattress pad recently and noticed grey/black spots ranging from 2-5 inches in diameter are scattered over the surface of the topper. None on the bottom of the topper. I have no idea what these spots are or were caused by. The topper arrived looking different than the one in the picture. The one I received is cream colored (except for the spots now). The topper was a superbly comfortable addition to my bed at first, however, the friction it caused on the vinyl portion of the waterproof mattress pad shredded the vinyl underside of the mattress pad. The topper started out being very comfortable and forming well to my body. It almost eliminated my hip and shoulder pain while sleeping and upon waking. Over the past 6 months, the topper has become less responsive to my body and is now much stiffer and less cushioning than when it arrived. I just tried contacting Foamex via the information on their website and only got an answering machine. I do not know what the spots are, if they are dangerous for asthmatics, or how to clean them - or IF I can clean them. There was no mention in the packaging (1 page that was basically a label - not really instructions) on how to care for the topper long-term or even that long-term care would be needed to prevent mold/mildew or whatever the spots are. Given the lack of information available and given at the outset as well as the deterioration of the topper in only 6 months, I would not recommend purchasing this topper. Aug 8, 2011 Update: Took off vinyl mattress pad covering Foamex topper & chemical smell was very strong. Tried to clean topper with vinegar spray as found on one website with cleaning ideas. Vinegar & topper combined to create overwhelming chemical odor that was to the point of nauseating. Running my hand across the topper yielded a slippery residue on my hands. The vinegar did nothing to help the spots so I threw the topper away. Within a few hours, the chemical smell dissipated significantly. I am sad to have thrown away the topper since it was helping control some shoulder & hip pain - did make my sleep more restful. But I didn't realize until a night without the topper in my apartment that the smell from the topper had been here all along.

Disappointed for the price
My king sized mattress is a little too hard for me, and I would often wake up with sore shoulders and hips after sleeping on it with just the mattress cover. So I looked around Amazon and decided on this one. Well, it is foam, it smells like foam, and it's the size it claims to be (although it does come up short on our mattress). I've bought a few foam toppers, but none of them caused me to wake up with neck pains and back pains. I still haven't figured it out, but I've been sleeping on it for six weeks now. It has taken away my shoulder and hip pains, but brought new ones in its place. I give it three stars because it solved the problem I had, does make the best softer, and my cat loves it (always a consideration), but it's far too expensive for what it is, and now I have brand new pains. Luckily I'm moving in two months out of the country, so I'll just get a better mattress. I would not buy it again or recommend it.

VERY COMFORTABLE
I HAD JUST PURCHASED A SLEEP-NUMBER MATTRESS SET AND FOUND IT VERY UNCOMFORTABLE AT ANY SLEEP NUMBER--THE TOP WAS TOO HARD. MY BROTHER SUGGESTED A MEMORY FOAM MATTRESS TOPPER. SO, WHAT THE HECK, I WOULD TRY IT AS IT WAS NOT THAT EXPENSIVE COMPARED TO WHAT I HAD TO PAY FOR THE SLEEP-NUMBER MATTRESS SET. IT WORKED PERFECTLY AT ANY SLEEP NUMBER(WHO CARES ABOUT THE SLEEP NO.!). A LOT SOFTER THAN THE TOP ON MY SLEEP NO. BED AND I SLEEP A LOT BETTER. WELL WORTH BUYING IT. DELIVERY WAS FAST AND IT ARRIVED IN GOOD SHAPE.
