Does it go without saying that this set requires a base of some sort in order to move it? Would a piece of plywood do the trick?

Moving it is easy. It is a stacked "layer cake" design, just like the Creator Expert Modular Buildings. It is 9 pieces stacked. They just lift off and it can be easily moved in that form. So lower level, 3 sections of the upper lower level, mid level, 3 sections of upper mid level, upper level. It is more complicated than the Modulars simple floors but works the same.

Hi. This is a fairly large LEGO set. It has just under 4800 pieces, weighs nearly 14 lbs, and the box measures approximately 20” x 23” x 8”. I don’t have exact dimensions of the set once built, but it’s fairly large. This is an awesome set!
