Yes, you can program or disable the buttons according to your needs.

Do you have to install the disk

It will work out of the box but as an IT Admin of 20 years and a PC gamer for 30 years I highly suggest to install the manufacture drivers and software for a better experience. There are several reviews specific to gaming that state this works better with the manufacture drivers. In which I agree with them. It doesn't take long to install and then you can change the colors to personalize it!
