I needed to cut some 6-32 threads in some stainless steel rods used to secure engine baffles underneath the engine for a Vans RV-9 Home-built Aircraft. I tried to make the threads with my Harbor Freight die that is made of carbon steel but it would not even scratch the surface of the stainless rods. I needed a much harder die that could cut stainless steel. I did some research and found that high quality dies that are made of Cobalt Steel, Titanium Steel, or High Speed Steel (HHS) could cut stainless. I happened to find this set and the product description said it is made of GCr15 Bearing Steel hardened to Rockwell 60 and could cut stainless. I didn't know what GCr15 steel was but I found the following definition online: GCr15 steel is one of the most commonly used Chinese bearing steels, it’s a high carbon chromium bearing steel with high hardenability, high & uniform hardness after heat treatment. I also looked up the rockwell 60 number which is based on a standard hardness scale that goes up to 62 so 60 is at the top of the range when it comes to hard steel. I was still a little skeptical since the price of this set was very low compared to other sets or individual dies I could find for cutting stainless. I decided to take a chance and try this set out since it had lots of good reviews saying the taps and dies in this set seemed to work well for most everyone who bought them and also several good comments about the customer service willing to refund customers who had any dissatisfaction with the product. My set arrived from Amazon in 2 days from ordering. I tried them out over the weekend and they cut very nice accurate threads in my stainless steel rods very easily while using a couple drops of tap magic oil. This set performs as advertised, it is made of industrial quality steel that can cut stainless steel. The other reviews also said the handles the set comes with are lower quality but I would say the handles are comparable to the ones that come in a Harbor Freight set. I also found on Amazon a very handy 5 piece set of GearWrench ratcheting handles for taps and dies that fit perfectly with this set and made the job easy. For the money, I don't think there is anything out there that compares to the quality of the steel in this set for cutting hard material.

I bought this set to re-tap some large canopy tent connectors. This set easily accomplished the mission. I was able to do about 35 re-taps and screwed in some 5/16 eye bolts with no issues. The taps and wrench were durable and it came in a decent case to hold the taps, dies and wrench. For the price, its really tough to beat and it did what it was made or set out to do. Highly recommended. Great value!!

However I was so impressed by performance of the EFFICERE 40-Piece Tap and Die Set - SAE Inch Sizes | Essential Threading Tool with Storage Case that made write this review for the benefit of others who struggled like me to find a tap and die that actually works. I did a lot of poking and reading reviews before I settled with 60 pieces set from Orion https://smile.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B08N51TFVG?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_titleI received that set and tried to use it on Boltmaster 1/4 in. Dia. x 36 in. L Steel Unthreaded Rod that I purchased from ACE. It couldn’t even make a dent on it, let a lone threading the rod. I sent it back write away and thought to try the cheaper one the SAE only as I don’t need the metric sizes. My decision in buying the EFFICERE set was solely based on the fact that it is manufactured from Industrial grade GCr15 bearing steel construction versus the carbon steel that the ORION set was made off. I took a gamble on that but boy I was right and luck. I only tried one die so far and boy I was surprised. It worked flawlessly and beautifully as it enabled me to make four threads in few minutes. It cut through my rod material like a knife cutting through melted butter. I will definitely recommend it and I will purchase the metric one if I ever run into need for it. Great product.

Nothing wrong with these basic sets. These don't have frills, and they don't come with instructions, but you have YouTube, or some old mechanic you can ask.I needed to tap treads in some steel, and in brass. So, I did the male and female from dissimilar metals.The process was about as good as you can expect for a basic set like this, and the threads mated perfectly.Not sure how they would hold up if I was doing this all day every day, but that's not what this product is intended for. For what I wanted it was great.A bonus is the incredibly fast delivery from Amazon. Even my local hardware store could not get it this fast.

**use cutting lubricant, do a turn or two (slow and steady--let it find the threading), back it out, clean it and hole, and then repeated that procedure** patience will be your friend and you and the tool will be happier in the end :)I just purchased the TAP and DIE set. I had a riveted bolt on the sending unit of my diesel tank break off, this worked PERFECT! I followed the counsel of other reviews and used cutting lubricant, and would do a turn or two, back it out, clean it, and then repeated that procedure until I had the new hole tapped. For a “VALUE” product, I feel like this kit will work well for periodic projects around the house if I continue to use it as directed. Some of the bottom threads did wear down slightly, but considering the quality of steel I was tapping this was reasonable. I would buy this again considering that each tap or die used properly should get at least 5 solid uses, and compared to the cost of other big name kits or having a machinist do it for you, this is a great deal!

I purchased this recently, so it does not put a lot of miles on it, but the thread gauge seems accurate, and I was able to clean up some old 6-32 and 8-32 steel bolts with the dies, as well as re-thread a 4-40 hole in aluminum. The quality of the taps and dies is very good - certainly comparable to ones that I have used for the last few decades. The only odd thing is that the finish on the die holder and larger tap holder look like the main parts were directly cast, then perhaps galvanized or chrome plated, and then put in the box (no polishing/finishing). Given that all other parts have a very fine finish, I assume it was intentional (less slippery?) Photo of die holder is attached

So I bought this to get tap handles, and the bigger tap handle is very nice, but the small tap handle is useless. It works for like two maybe three taps. It was cheap and you get what you pay for. I personally did not use any of the taps or dies so I cannot say whether or not the taps or dies are worth anything.

The dies and taps themselves seem pretty good, but the wrenches don't seem to stand up to real work. If all you use this for is cleaning up existing threads it will probably be fine, but after cutting new threads onto some bar stock my die wrench is twisted so the dies barely fit in anymore, the set screw sheared off 3 times, and the hole for the set screw is mangled. Maybe it fares better cutting threads in copper or aluminum, but it's not really great for steel. Still worth the price just for the taps and dies, but I'd recommend picking up some solid wrenches for serious work.This review has been updated to reflect the great customer service from Efficere Tools, who contacted me to let me know they refunded the purchase price of the tap & die set. So while I can't give the set a full 5 stars for the reasons listed above, they definitely earned 4 for the good customer service. I'd be happy to buy from them again. And as I said above, the dies themselves were fine and a great deal, just plan to spend a little extra on a sturdy wrench to use them on steel.
