Where can I find a replacement bulb for this item? I have tried several hardware stores and even Wal-Mart but cannot find the particular light bulb for this unit.

I replaced the origional incadescent bulb with a red 14 watt (60 watt equivalent) compact fluoresent bulb from Loews. It not only gives a deeper/richer "fire", but also eliminates the heating/plastic smell. This bulb is cool to the touch and cost $4.

Not very long...maybe 4 feet...about 2 feet left outside the fireplace. What I did is add an extension cord that has an on/off switch. It extends the cord and makes it easy to turn on and off. Works great!

i have just built a faux fireplace in my living room. does this get hot? can you turn off the crackling sound when wanted?

The only heat is from the @ 40 Watt bulb included. The crackling sound cannot be turned off, but I personally don't find it annoying or obtrusive but soothing. The sound is caused by revolving thin aluminum strips striking a surface. The whole effect is natural and effective. I enjoy mine!
