Platinum PTL-5000 is one of Platinum's 'standard' range of pens. It's a no-nonsense, understated design with a slim black AS resin body and gold-coloured metal trim. However the appeal of this pen is the 14k gold nib, available in medium, fine or extra-fine. A gold nib at this price level is unusual if not unprecedented, making this an extraordinarily good-value pen and a perfect opportunity to experience the feel of a high-quality gold nib. Review: Good value pen - Nice pen, which arrived from Japan quite quickly. Not quite as smooth writing experience as my usual Parker, but it may just need running in. The fine nib is wider than expected, so I should perhaps have gone for an extra fine. As others have pointed out this doesn’t include a converter. Good value pen. Review: Hard to beat at the price - Gold nib is unusual at this price and is practically useful if you use Iron Gall inks; it's not super smooth in the fine nib, it has some lovely tactility and feedback. It's very light, so easy to take anywhere and comes supplied with a converter. It's single best feature is that it's a terrifically reliable starter, something which many fountain pens can struggle with and which can send you irritably off looking for a crappy old bic. I have a range of fountain pens, some twice the price or more, but this is one of my favourites, a decently priced and well made pen with no significant problems or downsides - so much so that I bought one for my wife.

Recomendable 100%

Pretty good
There is nothing major wrong with this pen. It's pocket-sized and very lightly built, with a nice flexy nib that gives a bit of feedback similar to other Platinum gold nibs. I would compare it most to the soft fine on the 3776, but smaller and more mediocre. I have heard this pen felt cheap in the hand because it's plastic, but it is still decent fit and finish and I was pleasantly surprised. Adding a converter adds needed weight to make it feel less fragile. Posting tightly and often can add a minor mark on the circumference of the body where the cap is tightest, which is minor but disappointing quality control. The only major reason not to recommend this pen is because of the value. This pen is cheap and pretty good, but for only about $20 more you can get a truly great pen in the 3776 or the Pilot Custom 74.
