Like all DK Eyewitness books this doesn't disappoint. Lots of information, great photos and cool experiments to carry out.

my 6 year old has recenly got into rocks and fossils so I wanted to buy him a book on the subject. I looked at 2 books- this one and the Usborne Naturetrail book "Rocks & Fossils". I chose to buy this DK book but have since bought the other one as well since I did not feel that this was comprehensive enough. This book does have one very good element - it has fold out wipe clean covers showing over 100 different rocks and fossils and the places you are likely to find them so is a good guide to take out with you to help identify your finds, but is is mainly an activity book. There are about 23 different activites & experiments to try at home and when out & about which does not leave much room for information about the rocks themsleves and how they are created. This is where the Usborne book coems in (see my review of that book on its own page). In conclusion, if you want a reference book, buy the Usborne book first. This does however make a very good companion to it and would be a good buy for some school holiday activities.

Bought it as a gift so I only had a quick look at it on arrival. However it looks perfect for its target audience.

My nephew loved this. He lives in the Cotswolds and often digs up interesting 'stones'. I bought him a little box of fossils and magnifying glass to go with it, he says its the best present he's ever had!!

As with Sky Detective book by DK, I only skimmed through but again it looked to be another excellent book which I hope is a big help in teaching my nephew more about fossils etc. Recommended

I own a small jewelry business in our local community market and I have 6 boys who come visit me and very well may be future geologist. We have a small box of our left over minerals from our digs that they can choose a rock from each time they come. One day one young man asked me if I had any fossils. I not only gave him some fossils but also ordered him this book! The look on his face and his Mother's joy were priceless. A moment I won't forget and I hope he doesn't forget either.
