A bestseller gets even better! Every parent, teacher, social worker, therapist, and physician should have this succinct and informative book in their back pocket. Framed with both humour and compassion, the book describes ten characteristics that help illuminate - not define - children with autism. Ellen's personal experiences as a parent of children with autism and ADHD, a celebrated autism author, and a contributor to numerous publications, classrooms, conferences, and websites around the world coalesce to create a guide for all who come in contact with a child on the autism spectrum. This updated edition delves into expanded thought and deeper discussion of communication issues, social processing skills, and the critical roles adult perspectives play in guiding the child with autism to a meaningful, self-sufficient, productive life. A bonus section includes ten more essential, thought-provoking 'things' to share with young people on the spectrum as they cross the threshold of adulthood, and an appendix of more than seventy questions suitable for group discussion or self-reflection. This new edition sounds an even more resonant call to action, carrying the reader farther into understanding the needs and the potential of every child with autism. Review: Helping to understand autism - As a parent of two autistic boys life can be a challenge, every day will show you a side of your child that is as hard to accept as it is to understand. It is sometimes impossible to know what has caused a 'meltdown' and even more difficult to know what to do to calm the situation and return to as near a normality as you can. It seems, sometimes that an autistic child perceives a world that we can only visit on their terms. This book helps you to understand what those terms are and in doing so allows us in, and enables us to make informed and subtle changes that accomodate rather than agitate a complex mind. Ellen Notbohm is a mother of autistic children and deals with the issues of autism in a sensitive and somtimes humourous way and since she is first and foremost a parent, she manages to convert some of the language of the phsycologists into practical, understandable and usable information. Review: If you have any contact with a person on the autistic spectrum buy this book - I borrowed a copy of this when ASD was mentioned in connection with my son - oh my goodness, it taught me so much in a very short amount of time. Everything about my son, and I mean EVERYTHING, started to make sense. One of the things I really loved was the fact that the author is a parent of an AS kid, and had such wisdom to share. I have now bought a copy for 6 members of my family, and 3 friends. I think anyone connected to AS should read this book.

Read this book!
We are in the beginning stages of early intervention therapies for our 2 year old son who has displayed very distinct signs of Autism and after I read this book all of my fears were put to rest. The more you know about something, the less you will worry and this book was my first (and greatest) step on the road to understanding this condition and moving forward with my son to a fulfilling life and reaching milestones! Definitely worth a read, I would highly recommend it and have had all of my family and friends who spend time with my son read it as well so they have a better understanding.

Very good
This has really helped in understanding the students that I have worked with and do work with presently. Although each child is very unique thin points the main aspects of why children with autism could behave a particular way. It is written well and easy to read. I would recommend.

For every parent who has a child on the spectrum..........
I have the original edition of this book and just had to have the extended edition. It is quite frankly the best book I have ever brought and is my absolute bible for helping me understand and bring up my child who is on the spectrum. I have shared it with all my family and some professionals to help everyone have a better understanding of my child. I cannot recommend this book enough, I have laughed, cried and become a better parent for reading this.

Its Like a Light Has Been Switched On
This book is a must have for parents that have a child with Autism or anyone dealing or working with a child that has the condition. My son is three and has Autism and i can honestly say that this book has helped me so much to understand the nature of the condition and more importantly how to deal with certain situations. It equips you with the a perspective from the flip side of the coin and opens your eyes to what really matters and more importantly what you need to know. It can be a tough read at times but thoroughly worth it...don't hesitate its fantastic and really inspiring

As the parent of a newly-diagnosed child with autism, this is really useful!
This was one of the first books I read about Autism, and one of the best so far! Ellen's style is chatty, and I found the book a good read - it flowed well, and the advice it contained is just what I need! As the parent of two children who have grown up and done well at what they have tried for, it gives me hope for my son's future! This is one book which I will gladly recommend to any parent with a newly-diagnosed child with autism - it's a great starter!
