Question 1

Does it detect vocs

Accepted Answer

People understandably are interested in measuring VOCs in the air, but there’s a problem. You can find many cheap air quality monitors which claim (correctly) to be able to measure VOCs but what they can’t do is tell you exactly what they are measuring. Aerosol deodorant? Benzene? Exhaust fumes? Alcohol?

You can get VOC measurement devices that can diagnose exactly what compounds it has detected with great accuracy (google the UK manufactured “Tiger” VOC handheld unit, which gets great reviews but unfortunately costs around £2,500. It’s smaller brother, the Tiger LT can be had for around £1,000 cheaper. These are small but complex bits of kit for serious use)

So although it’s kind of interesting to see the level of VOC in the air, it doesn’t really tell you much unless you know what you’re measuring.

Stand near a glass of wine and a cheap VOC monitor will go nuts. Alcohol fumes. Now I wouldn’t say that was a bad thing! And the monitor will also go nuts if you’re close when your wife has applied her hair spray. And that IS a bad thing! But you know that already. So I’m not sure you get much useful information from this feature unless you’ve got a unit like the Tiger, which uses PID (photoionisation detection) to measure accurately.

Question 2

What are VOC's please?

Accepted Answer

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are compounds that contain carbon that is able, through various means, turn into gases. They can be found in everyday items such as paint thinners, paint, aerosol cans, petrol & diesel exhaust and certain wood floorboards (containing formaldehyde).
