I feel the need too change my review from mixed to 5 stars. After entering hotel business this book served me as a bible for the last half a year. Concise, yet full of systematic knowledge. The best chapters in the book for me were about soft skills: The listening fast track Becoming a leader in the hospitality industry The integrity dividend in hospitality leadership Developing and managing your multinational career For someone who is new to this business this resource gave a nice logical framework for career development.

Awesome book for anyone considering going into the field.
Amazing book for anyone who wants a taste of what the hospitality industry is like, but contains many practices that can be applied to many different businesses. It's worth a read and is actually very, very interesting. Helped me re-direct my career plans in a positive way.

Great foundation for those aspiring to work in Hospitality!
This book represents a set of guidelines for owning a hotel, working within or understanding the hospitality industry. It explains the advantages and disadvantages of different types of business strategies such as low cost and differentiation. It identifies guidelines on how to create and communicate a mission statement. It discusses the types of ownership within the real estate industry. It describes some methods to value properties namely the cost approach, cash flow approach, and the sales comparison. The book provides insights into the legal environment for real estate, and it defines best practices to address labor union issues. It lists the common leadership competencies namely personal excellence, effective communication, relationships, and an environment with cross teams. Best hospitality book I've read.
I may never make it to an ivy league school, but I can study their material and apply that knowledge to my career. I read a lot of books, trying to give myself an advanced understanding of the hospitality industry, while gaining an edge. this book is by far the best one I've read.

Overall comfortable reading and many management applications...
Good overview of lodging business. Maybe next edition will be more quantitative and include more industry ratios. Excellent reference book even if some management practices are not applicable to smaller operations.
