I've got a 20 pound main coon mix. Would this be up for a heavy beating?

I have 9 'normal' size cats (10-12 pounds) and one Maine Coon at 18-20 pounds. Seems to hold up really well for all concerned and has lasted a remarkably long time, all claws considered. And Amazon has the best price around. My cats love it so much that I ordered two more so they wouldn't fight over the different snoozing levels. I think your Maine Coon will be very content with it.

how much weight does the platforms hold?

I have two male cats that are 8 months old, 7.5lbs each and the Kitty City holds both of them perfectly fine. We have rebuilt the Kitty City in many different shapes and combinations, and which ever way we manipulate the structure it still holds the weight of our cats perfectly fine. Our cats will get a running start and jump/swing onto the the scratching posts and romp around the Kitty City just fine. The cats will also get into some intense play fighting on the Kitty City platforms and it has withheld all of their crazy fun. It is an amazing cat-tree-house, you can't beat the quality or the price. Go ahead a purchase, you won't regret it!

I need a platform area that I can put the cats food so my small dog doesn't eat it. Are there solid enough areas to hold a food bowl?

I have my kitty city configured so that the brown hammock shelf is on the second story of kitty city and both my cats eat their food from it to avoid the dog. Cats are 13.5 and 10 lbs each and there are times when both sit and eat from the same platform.

Why is this cheaper than the starter kit?

I’m not sure why it’s cheaper, but my 2 cats love the kitty city. They are Kitizens of Kitty city.
