What is the difference between the av157 and the av355?

The AV157 is a 17" wide sound bar while the AV355 is a 24" wide sound bar with a bit lower profile so it fits under lower-slung TVs. Other than size and cabinet construction the sound bars are virtually the same. They both contain 12 levels of voice boost and play great clear sound. Chris, ZVOX Audio

Does this unit operate with an older Samsung TV that is running through a cable box?

We prefer you connect the sound bar directly to your TV. We prefer you use our optical cable and connect to the Digital Optical out but you can connect to RCA analog outs as well. If your TV doesn't support audio outs, you can connect through the cable box. Chris, ZVOX Audio

The bar height, 5.7" is too tall. Can I put it on it's back?

Yes, you can place "flat" on furniture and speaker will play fine. ZVOX
