Kept me hooked from start to finish
A 4.75 star rating from me. What a gripping rollercoaster of a read. This story hooked me from the very beginning and kept me engaged right through to the end. It’s fast paced, easy to follow, and genuinely entertaining. It does become slightly predictable in the second half, but even then, it still managed to deliver more than I expected. There were enough twists and turns to keep things interesting, and it definitely keeps you on your toes. The writing style is simple and accessible, which made it a really easy read. I also liked how the character backstories were revealed in small pieces throughout the book, rather than long drawn out chapters. It all comes together nicely towards the end without feeling heavy. I’d definitely recommend this if you’re looking for a quick, fast paced read with plenty of twists.

Plot seems implausible but it kept me hooked
I can't remember what was the trigger to buy this book but it seems to review well (and has sold huge numbers). I think I may have confused it with The Maid but I liked the sound of this book so decided to give it a go. By the look of the cover it's going to be great. I'd not heard of the author but was interested in her combination of medical and psychological thriller writing as careers. I was also impressed with her long list of novels. This book has 328 pages split into 61 chapters and was first published in 2022. From the start it is clear that something awful has happened. We are then taken back a few months to find out what. There are plenty of secrets and some very weird events. The readers senses are heightened and there is a lot of suggestion. The narrative starts looking from Millie's perspective - she is very cautious of her environment although is not an innocent party which adds plenty of layers. The concept of the plot is tight with a small cast of characters making it an unchallenging book to read but there are enough twists to keep the attention all the way through. Gradually the story moves along, all the time keeping enough tension to make you think it is all going to go wrong at any moment. The prologue has introduced the idea of a body in the attic but there is a lot to be discovered before the book gets to that. Complexity is added and, whilst it all seems implausible, I did get hooked in and I loved the ending. It seemed unlikely that this book is going to be developed into a series but that is what has happened and I'm definitely going to get the next one.

Gripping!
Absolutely fantastic and hard to put down - people often say that, but in this case it is definitely true. Just finished this one and have already bought books 2 and 3 of her Housemaid series, as it was the best book I've read in a while!

Absolute Masterpiece! I couldn’t put it down.
Wow. Just wow. I read The Housemaid in a single sitting and my jaw is still on the floor!Freida McFadden is the absolute queen of psychological thrillers. Nina’s character is absolutely fascinating, and her incredibly smart, meticulous planning completely blew me away as the story unfolded. Just when you think you have everything figured out, she hits you with a twist that completely flips the entire book upside down. The pacing is fast, and the suspense kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. If you love books filled with dark secrets and mind-bending twists, you need to read this immediately. The movie adaptation was spectacular too—both are a 10/10. Highly, highly recommend!

Page turner
This was my first time reading Freida McFadden and I was not disappointed. You really dont know where this is going until 3\4 of the way through, it is gripping and exciting and a real turn of events at the end. Thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend. Ready to read the next in the series now

Spine chilling thriller
I found this story very similar to Behind Closed Doors by B.A.Paris which I also enjoyed. It’s a twisty psychological thriller that had me squirming in my seat. The story follows Millie, who desperate for work takes a job as housekeeper/maid for Nina and Andrew Winchester. The Winchesters are wealthy, have a beautiful house and a seemingly perfect marriage. However, as Nina’s behaviour becomes more unhinged Millie starts to realise that all is not what it seems. I was a bit behind the curve in reading this and was curious whether it deserved all the hype. Whilst I really enjoyed it I think I was expecting too much after all the rave reviews. Not a lot happens in the first half of the book but the author builds the tension well, I knew something was off but couldn’t quite figure out what. I thought the switch in narrative to Nina halfway through worked really well and I liked we got to see things from her point of view too. The second half of the book was much more fast paced and was completely gripping. I didn’t get the whole twist at the end and liked the idea of the ending but it did feel a bit rushed to me and certain parts of it I thought were too far fetched. I found it quite difficult to rate this book, I think if I’d read it with no preconceptions then it would be 4 stars so that’s what I’ve gone with! Overall, an intriguing, spine chilling thriller that keeps you guessing until the end.

A page turner
This is a very good, well plotted thriller. I did guess ‘the twist you never saw coming’ because the blurb said there was one. And once I know that I can usually work out the twist based on the most surprising thing it could be. And voila that was the twist. And there was a bit of extra twist because one twist is never enough. Written in the first person the author is in very tight control of the story and the reader only really sees what she wants us to. Well, that’s ok if you are a really good writer and McFadden certainly falls into that category. She keeps us guessing with a tale just this side of believable. (Don’t over think it) It felt very much like a long treatment for a film script and I believe it now is a film. It’s definitely a page turner. So why am I only giving it 3? Well written. Well plotted. Page turner. Big twist and smaller twist towards end and at end. I’m giving it 3 because I guessed the ending. I felt slightly manipulated by the author and my brain didn’t get to do enough work. I think it’s not a book that will stay with me after reading. But I’m about to read the sequel, so that’s a compliment to the author. This time I’m going to try and avoid knowing if there is a twist or not. And just let my mind roam. As a PS I see the second book is basically the first book all over again so it’s going directly to the charity shop with this one.

Muito bom
Não conseguia parar de ler. O enredo é excelente, embora previsível. O que mais me surpreendeu foi o final. Valeu a pena.
