Ive been asked to get rico alto sax reeds size 3 - i know nothing about them is strength 3 the same thing? grateful for any advice

Some useful information here but not accurate. Yes a softer Reed is easier to play but you may not hit the higher registers well as a consequence. Reed strength should be matched to the mouthpiece tip opening. The frequently advised - soft for learners is just plain wrong! If you need to work with a soft read to build your embouchure then change your mouthpiece accordingly. Fact is, the majority of mouthpieces offered with the student instruments are cheap affairs stuck on the end to sell it. Do a little research and look out a second hand ebonite mouthpiece on an auction site. You will be stunned at the duffereance it makes to your instrument, your playing and your pleasure!

How long should one reed last? My daughter has just started sax and went through a three pack in a month.

Hi, that's a difficult one to answer. I have a one hour lesson every week and I practice for about 5 hours every week and a reed will last me a month or so. These things are so delicate, maybe she's catching them on her clothes or something. They are an excellent reed and I know they are not cheap. Perhaps consider buying a cheaper reed, but then she may just go through twice as many. What about trying a 2.00 or a 2.5?
