Would this work well to remove the smell of forest fire smoke from synthetic sleeping bags?

Yes. I used it for my coat and sleeping bag after working a backcountry trail crew all summer. Removed the stains and most of the smells. I used a little bit of white vinegar for the rest.

it is shelf stable for a year . I have used it after its been open for a while and it cleans just as well.

Definitely NOT! There is a potential for problems if you wear clothes impregnated with optical brighteners in natural sunlight. You should definitely avoid UV brighteners. NikWax is the best product that you can use for your outdoor wear. It will keep your active wear looking and performing like new. No, I don't work for NikWax:} I'm a skier with a lot of pants and jackets. Kjus, a manufacturer of luxury ski wear, actually recommends NikWax on their site for care. I've been using NikWax products for years and it has kept everything perfect and won't strip the clothing of its protective coating. I use more than just the Techwash too. I use their down wash product and also some of their leather waterproofing and cleaning products on my gloves and footwear.

Works well

I tested it on a normal nylon bag. The bag was not water resistant at all from the start. The first time I washed the bag then applied TX Direct Spray, the fabric became slightly water resistant. I figured it could be improved. I washed it more deeply and rinsed it much better, then applied the TX Direct again. The second time the water beading is much better. It does work, just wash well and rinse thoroughly, then spray, wipe excess and you'll be good.

Good.

Use it for washing my Osprey backpack after my weekly hike. Singapore weather so hot and humid. After every hiking or walking trip my back and backpack will be sweaty. So this product is good. Just small capful and able to handwash my backpack and hiking shoe together as well if required. Definitely a good purchase. However, price a bit on the high side.
