Used to remove particulates from murky/muddy water
In preparation for an upcoming backpacking trip in the Grand Canyon I knew that we would have to use water from the Colorado River to drink. I knew the River was very silty and would easily clog my sawyer filter. One needs to add a flocculant to this water to make the suspended particles stick to each other (to make them heavier than water so they'll sink to the bottom)There appears to be several kinds of aluminum compounds that are used as a flocculant. Water Wizard (poly aluminum chloride) is a well known product among the Grand Canyon rafting groups. It is a little expensive but at the time it wasn't available. It is mixed at a dose that is 80% of the maximum suggested dose. The more common chemical that many water treatment plants use is aluminum sulfate. In my readings, the maximum suggested dose of aluminum sulfate is 50 mg per treated liter of water. I chose to use 80% of the maximum dose so I dissolved 100 mg of this into 125 mg of purified water (used a postal scale to measure and bought water from a grocery store). I had to shake it vigorously and use a chopstick to break things apart in the bottle. It did not dissolve right away (even though the solubility properties of aluminum sulfate indicated that it would easily dissolve). I left this overnight and the next morning everything was completely dissolved. With this solution the dose is one drop per liter (one drop contains 40 mg aluminum sulfate).I initially tried this at home: mixed dirt and clay in one gallon of water, then added 4 drops, shook vigorously then let sit for 30 minutes. It did cause most of the silt to settle but it still looked like pale grapefruit juice. I did this several times with the same result. In the Grand Canyon the Colorado was very silty(looked like chocolate milk due to the high amounts of run off from snowmelt). One of my friends also brought Water WizardMy aluminum sulfate and the Water Wizard seemed to be equally effective. (All 5 of us came to the same subjective opinion) For some reason, the treated Colorado water seemed to be clearer than my water that I treated at home. I did find that the longer that I let the water sit, the clearer the water was. If I let it sit overnight, the water was almost crystal clear by morning.I'm quite happy with my purchase and I learned a lot about this aspect of backpacking

Used for solar dyeing my yarn and worked perfectly!
I recently started solar dyeing yarn with flowers and needed Aluminum Sulfate as a mordant to soak the yarn in prior to dyeing it. I chose this particular product based on other reviews and suggestions from friends who have used it. It is packaged very well with a sealing tab to close it up after using. I did wear a mask when using it as I have with other dyeing products. It dissolved quickly in hot water and worked very well as the yarn took the dye very well. It worked perfectly for my project and would purchase it again when the need arises.

Excellent soil acidifier for blueberry plants
I bought this product (1 lb) to re-home a blueberry plant into a larger pot. It arrived on time and in good condition. I had never worked with blueberry plants before so I added the aluminum sulfate in small amounts over the course of a week and tested with a pH meter. It took some time to get the pH where it should be because the chemical tends to leach out with repeated watering but the blueberry plant is now happy with it's new home. If I decide to get a few more I will return to this product.

Works fast for hydrangeas
Working really well! My hydrangeas have come up a soft pink the past few years, so i knew my soil had changed ph. The bag didnt have instructions, so at first i started sprinkling it at the base of the plants (wrong thing to do). But then i checked my email & saw that the company had sent me an email letting me know to dissolve 1/4 cup in a gallon of water per week til desired color is acheived. After just a few days some of the blooms have already started changing to blue & purple!

It didn't save our plant, but it probably was too far gone.
It will be tried on our next acid loving plant

Did not Flocculate paint
I could not get the brand of aluminum sulfate I wanted and I bought this brand. It did not flocculate my acrylic paint wastewater, and I donโt know why.

Helps to dispose acrylic paint water
As an artist, this is one of the ingredients I use to dispose my acrylic paint water to get rid of micas, etc. I feel it is necessary to help the environment and not put it down the kitchen sink.
