I used both on my Samsumg Galaxy S8+ and its a solid magnetic grip, but only with both. :) My case also has a few magnets too.

Great little gaget
The perfect solution to hands-free mobile phone use. The powerful magnet holds my phone on the vent so that I can see my GPS or who may calling me. I use it every time I drive!

Problematic
I was excited to get this for my car, but the description fails to mention a couple of things:1) The magnetic you stick on the back of the phone means you can't use a cordless charger. It doens't charge. Instead it makes an alarm on my cordless charger go off.2) I have an otterbox Defender case which has both a hardshell and then a rubber protective exterior to put over that. I put the magnet on the rubber exterior. But when I try to take the phone off the holder in the car, it stretches out the rubber exterior as it releases it. This will destroy the rubber exterior pretty quickly so that it ends up too big for the phone.3) I tried putting the magnet on the hardshell with the rubber exterior over the top, but this made the magnet too weak to hold the phone in place.If I'd know the above, I would have purchased the kind of holder that clasps the phone. To avoid having to return this, I put the magnet on the back of the Otterbox belt clip case. Then I attach that to the magnet base in my car. This makes it all a bit heavy and awkward, but does the job when I need to use GPS, etc.

Poor adhesive on magnet attached to phone back. Fail if phone heats up.
As phone is used for navigation, it is continually draining power. The rear of the phone (iPhone 6) heated up and as a result the adhesive on the magnet failed and phone fallls off onto floor. Quite problematic!
