Schaum's Outline of College Algebra, 4th Edition (Schaum's Outlines)

I am using these Schaum Outlines to regain mastery of my fundamental mathematic skills as a prelude to studying actuary science. And, until I can afford to go back to college, I'm on my own. I'm still working my way through this outline. However, it's worth the effort. I love the fact that this book shows the general format of the equation, and it works through the format to demonstrate how to solve the problem. It's tough sledding, but it is so easy with this text. My only complain is that Schaum's advertise that you may have access to a series of supplementary videos that offer additional instruction. When you go to the website, you just get advertisements for more McGraw-Hill Educational products. However, I'm getting what I need from YouTube.com.

I took College Algebra many years ago and wanted to sharpen my algebra skills. I feel ready. Concise explanations and good example problems. Plenty of additional exercises if you want more practice. I will review more math classes with Schaum's.

The book is a great source of information. It is not the answer all, but it is good. On some items (problems) it gets a little fuzzy on how they came to that answer on some problems, but must are pretty good and understandable. I wish this book was a little more clear on the formulas out come when doing certain problems. Just my opinion. all in all a 4 Star book for me.

This is the book that every college student should have.

I have used Schaum's outlines for quite a few years. I may be biased toward an old-school, just-the-facts kind of presentation. I have used other types of math books, with cartoons and colors, but I didn't find that they were necessarily better in explaining concepts and taking me through the details. I have just started using the 4th edition of Schaum's College Algebra. It is largely unchanged from previous editions, which I also used for review and new learning in the recent and distant past. I have started a Notes and Errata page on my website, for any glitches that I happen to find. As far as I can tell, not much has changed: reviews from previous editions should largely apply to the 4th ed. Note that I am using the printed version. I did buy a Kindle version of the third edition at one point, but was quite dissatisfied: the words and symbols did not translate well, or were poorly typeset.

This was the perfect book for my Algebra review in pursuit of starting to study Number Theory! Thank you, it was easy to use and I able to hit the ground running.

The book has lots of algebraic mistakes. Normally, I would not mind that in a math book, but since it's Algebra we are dealing with, it's critical. Kindle version has lots of issues with the format also. Some expressions are difficult to read and sometimes they are simply cut off.

It is hard to find a book with as much info concentrated in one volume, and for such a low cost. It is a good way to go for comprehensive review. But the book has a number of errors, both in the answers to supplementary problems (best to check your hand work with a computer algebra program or calculator if the answer key indicates your answer is wrong), and the section on values of common logs for numbers <1 (Section 23.4) is very wrong. While calculation of the log using the "minus 10" method will yield a correct answer, the "negative" values they show are incorrect (wrong characteristic, wrong mantissa). Consequently, all answers for supplementary problem set 23.31 are incorrect as well.

This book allowed me to learn algebra!
