I have wood flooring and carpet. I also have a dog and vast that shed horribly. Would this pick up the hair on the wood for my grandson?

The suction is very light, but depending on your type of dog hair it might get some. I might suggest this if you want your grandson to feel like he’s actually cleaning, https://www.walmart.com/ip/BLACK-DECKER-DUSTBUSTER-Quick-Clean-Cordless-Hand-Vacuum-HNV115J06/49418036

does it make noise? that is vitally important to the potential recipient!

Yes, it does. It requires batteries, and when you turn it on, it actually has a gentle suction action. It makes noise, but it's not the same caliber noise as a standard vacuum :)

How long is the cord on this vacuum?

Battery operated. Cord is decorative only. Maybe 2 feet long, but not functional.

What size batteries and how many?

Hi - here is a screen grab of the batteries required - if you cannot read it - it says 4 x "C' batteries required.
