From teenage princess to accomplished queen, forever torn between duty and personal longing, the reign of Elizabeth I is exposed in this lavish four-part drama starring Anne-Marie Duff and Tom Hardy. Filmed against a backdrop of some of Great Britain's most beautiful houses and landscapes, the programme follows Queen Elizabeth (Duff) from her days of fear as a potential victim of her sister's terror, through her great love affair with Robert Dudley (Hardy), into her years of triumph over the Spanish Armada, and finally her old age and her last, enigmatic relationship with her young protege, the Earl of Essex (Hans Matheson). Review: Captivating and absorbing telling of Queen Elizabeth I's story - I found this the most absorbing version of Queen Elizabeth I's life story I've seen. It captured the wiful and changeable aspects of her personality, hardly surprising as she had had to survive a childhood and younger life where her experiences swung from one extreme to another and she was never in control of anything. I've seen other retellings of Elizabeth's life, including Elizabeth R and the movies Elizabeth and The Golden Age, and this feels more believble than any. The complexity of her relationship with Dudley was totally believable and understandable. The locations, costumes, and music all contribute to making this a haunting and memorable film, one that stays with you for sometime afterwards. As a longtime fan of the Mediaeval Baebes, I enjoyed the soundtrack very much. Review: Brilliant historical drama - Somehow I missed this when it first aired, but I'm pleased to have seen it now. What a powerful and brilliant dramatisation of the reign of the Elizabeth I. It seems fitting that the daughter of Henry VIII and the tragic Anne Boleyn became arguably the strongest, most powerful monarch in history. There is a strong and able cast. Anne Marie Duff excels in the leading role, and Tom Hardy makes a gorgeous, dynamic Robert Dudley. Thanks to some helpful reviews, I managed to get the 2006 version and so have the full four episodes, whereas I believe the newer edition has been edited. I enjoyed every minute. There are negative comments on here about the make up, but this was made over 10 years ago and so it's important to bear that in mind. The costumes and settings are superb. If you enjoy historical drama (and are willing to accept there may be a few historical inaccuracies) then you're in for a treat.

My favourite mini series
My favourite mini series. I have watched this so many times and never get bored. The acting is superb, Marie Anne Duff is amazing as usual, Tom Hardy is gorgeous, the costumes are stunning. Although not 100% accurate, it really isn't a bad portrayal of Elizabeth with some nice moments that I felt really captured how I imagine her to have been.

Gripping plot, epic sound track and amazing make up
I chose this series at first because I knew Tom Hardy and I was keen to see how he performed in this movie. I liked him, though it wasn't a difficult character to perform. Of course, the main character was the Queen, which was performed beautifully by Ann Marie Duff. I watched the previous version and I found this one pretty different and I got rather surprised (particularly when it comes to talk about real historic events), which made me think that I have to read something more about the Queen. At first, I thought the plot was too concerned in Queen's fellings, but then I understood that her feelings always affected her decisions, and for this reason her story is so interesting. I wrote it was gripping: I meant that the plot flows quickly through long Queen's life, of which it gives many shots, well linked one to to other. The make up was amazing, expecially in the last episode. I liked the sound track too, it was moving and sad and it has a pleasant and rather quick pace which makes it a kind of musical summary of the story. Finally, an information for those who aren't English mother-tongue: there are no subtitles!

Wonderful!
Having viewed many programs both on TV and film about Elizabeth, i can honsetly say it was one of the most brilliant. Anne-Marie Duff plays a fantastic Elizabeth showing both her strengths and her weaknesses. The only part I was disappointed with was the very very badly done make up artistry when aging Elizabeth. It ruined viewing the last part of the series. I was concentrating more on the plastic on her face rather than what she was saying. But, overall, fabulous. But, Cate Blanchett will always be the best!!!

Excellent Period drama!!
Arrived in decent time (amazon prime del) Packaging was really good and kept the dvd safe. I bought this for my mum and mother in law for Christmas, as I have seen this a few years back and I have always remembered it as I thought it was brilliant! The storey of Elizabeth I is only that I will always remember. Riviting! Exciting! Deceitful! Agonising! Love storey!

The Virgin Queen (BBC) comments
Scenic point of view remarquable !, the costumes excellent, brilliant acting, BBC Drama Department at its best once again. Fabulous. Well done
