Prep the seeds before planting
These grew some great gourds for me this year. Getting the seeds to sprout is a little tricky, do a little bit of research before you plant them. I found that cutting the very tips and sides of the seeds off before you plant will help them sprout.

Note to self, have a lot of room to plant!
I planted the seeds and I was very surprised to see how much the plant vines out! Next time I plant em I’m gonna make sure I have more room! The seeds grew well, they came in a basic white packet instead of a normal seed packet that has image and seed description behavior, which I wasn’t a big fan of. They didn’t cost much which was nice, and the seeds were very weird and unique looking! Never had seen bottle gourd seeds before!

They are sprouting!!
I read a book about growing gourds from seeds, and I snipped off the “ears” with a nail clipper, and soaked them overnight. I then planted them with seed starter mix in a tray with small compartments but then when I tried to remove them, some seedlings broke. So, I planted a few more seeds in peat pots, which I can plant directly in the ground once they grow 4 leaves. The seedlings grew so long that they were flopping over so I bought aluminum wire on Amazon and made stands that looked like lollipops so the circle at the top could hold them up. I also bought a grow light, not really necessary, though out of all the different kinds of seeds I planted, the gourd seeds are doing the best. Keep in mind that there will always be a few that don’t germinate but that’s life…and one thriving plant will take up a lot of room and proliferate.

Didn't sprout
[Update Aug2026] After 1.5months 4/10 are sprouted. It just took time but it worked so I added stars. [Update Jul2023] I saw 10 and none sprouted in 1 month. A gourd seed I got from friend which she got from Philippines spouted within a week, so this gourd seeds I got from Amazon was completely defect. Maybe they didn't store well. It's been 2 weeks but nothing is sprouting yet. Followed instruction and put in pots on 1July. I'll try other batch today.

Germinated well!
They sprouted so well! Here I thought the Annie's brand ones weren't sprouting because of my methods and cool weather. Nope. These are just quality seeds. I still trimmed the seed tips with a nail trimmer, soaked them in water for 12 hours, and then put them in a damp paper towel covered by a damp wash cloth. Took a little less than a week to sprout. I do have a small greenhouse I'm growing one in and it's doing fantastic so far. Will update when it starts making gourds 🤞

Crappy stuff.
Only got three seeds. Only one of them germinated. So far a slow grower, and I don't think I'll get any gourds.

If you want to grow some gourds, grab these!
I planted these over the spring and oh my goodness these are amazing!! At first i didn’t think they would take off but they did! The gourds are huge!!! I get tickled everyday I go out to look at them and to see how many I have and how big they are getting.

Mixed shapes and smaller than expected
About 70% of the seeds germinated, which I was happy with for a gourd. However, the gourds varied considerably in shape, from hourglass forms to goosenecks and short, thin handles. They also stayed much smaller than other bottle gourds I’ve grown by about half. The specific variety wasn’t identified in the listing or on the package, and neither the description nor the listing photo made it clear that I should expect mixed shapes. I bought these expecting a consistent type of gourd. If you enjoy an assortment of shapes, you may like these. For my purposes, the lack of consistency was disappointing. A clear variety name and an accurate description of the expected size and shape would have helped me decide before purchasing.
