Featuring the obscure, the unusual, the unbuilt and the unseen. The secret is out - Secret Projects is back. This is a new title in this highly acclaimed series, this time looking at concepts developed by the US aircraft industry in the years immediately prior to and during World War 2.This book includes and describes the major fighter and bomber proposals form the American aircraft industry which embrace various fighter and interceptor concepts, medium, heavy and intercontinental bombers, attack aircraft and anti-submarine aircraft, both for the USAF and US Navy. Particular emphasis is placed on 'Circular Proposals' - a system of submitting designs against requirements circulated around the industry by the Army Air Force in the 1930s and early 1940s.The illustrations show drawings and photographs of unbuilt designs merged with the history and photographs of real aeroplanes. Very little has been published previously about American projects from this time period and much of the material will not have been seen widely before. it will therefore be fascinating reading for all lovers of the previously highly successful 'Secret Projects' series and aviation historians. Reasonable second hand price as well, which is a rarity for the Secret Project series, whose prices are normally ramped up massively by booksellers. Review: Great book on a nice subject. - A nice subject and lots of info. But lacks a bit of depth ( maybe there is no more to know ?). Sometimes pictures and text is a bit difficult to connect as the appear on different pages. But I like the subject and can recommend it. Fits in fine with the rest of the "**fill in land*** Secret Projects" books.

Another excellent edition to Butlers secret projects series
Another excellent edition to Butlers secret projects series. Some minor quibbles: it is never made clear on the title pages inside the book what exactly is the aircraft depicted on the excellent front cover of the book (I assume it is the tailless maritime patrol bomber listed later) and referring to the lockeed hudson as being developed from the twin electric aircraft (Electra?) and other minor typos.

Secret?
Most of the information, if not all, has been available for years from the Putnam range for one, l suppose they where secret back in the time but a lot in the book became mainstream! Best bit is the Dust Cover illustration

illustrazioni all' altezza d' informazioni storico tecniche eccellenti
Spedizione tempi e imballo perfetti come sempre. Consigliato a tutti gli aviation fan testo obbligatorio per chi "what if"

American Secret Projects - the achievements before and during World War Two
Focus of the Second Edition of the "Fighters, Bombers and Attack Aircraft, 1937-1945" adds much to the prior edition, with a focus on the run-up to and duration of the Second World War. The book is organized into nine Chapters, pus two Appendices, as follows: - 1 - USAAF Single-Engine Fighters - 2 - USAAF Twin-Engine Fighters [p. 56] - 3 - USAF Light and Medium Bombers - 4 - USAF Heavy Bombers - 5 - USAF Attack Aircraft [p.129] - 6 - US Navy Fighters - 7 - US Navy Attack Aircraft [p.191] - 8 - Maritime Patrol Aircraft and Flying Boats [p.223] - 9 - Miscellaneous Programs The two appendices include: One: American Second World War Fight and Bomber Project Summary [p. 251]; Two: Specifications. This is followed by a Bibliography and Source Notes, and Index. Included are almost 450 photos, drawings and artist concepts. The book has a massive amount of textual data, augmented by accompanying drawings (usually 3-view), and occasion photo, plus a data block of specifications. While all the more familiar World War II fighters and their development projects - such as the Republic P-47J and P-72 - the books real value is in the lesser known design projects that have never seen the light of coverage (Burnelli XBA-1 and Chance Vought VS-302 light bombers, Consolidated LB-26 or LB-28 medium bombers, or Martin Model 189/XB-33 Super Marauder high-altitude, high-wing bomber powered by two Wright R-3350 turbo or two-stage engines.) That there are hundred's of these project and design efforts, show how robust the American aerospace industry was from the late-1930s, thru WW II, and including the immediate days following when some designs in prototype stages had yet to fly on complete acceptance tests - such as the mix-power plant Curtis XF-15C-1, using an Allison-de Havilland H1-B Goblin jet and P&W R2800-34W 2,100-hp radial engine. This is truly a great addition to aerospace design and developments, and a fine tribute to the thousands of aircraft designers who contributed to the designs, R&D, and final production. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !!!

The secret projects series by Butler combines to show the aviation design advancements of different nations. This is a stunning achievement which has long been kept from the public by the pace of progress. In looking back one can see the various steps, the cross-fertilization of ideas between manufacturers, nations and so much more. If anything this book and others in this series will cause the reader to look far more closely at the aircraft they might be viewing, to appreciate its design and far more fully understand where those ideas evolved from. For some these may be books about aircraft design, on reflection they are instead about the sweep of technological design and advancement from 1935 to the present..
