I was sent another due to the first one not beeping. The second one also does not beep. What am I missing?

I agree that the greatest fault I also have with this item is the very, very hard to hear beep. I suggest you let someone else confirm that it is or is not beeping in a quiet room.. If there are others in the room talking or a radio or TV playing, you are not going to hear it even with normal hearing. You can confirm my opinion by reading this most common compliant for this item. Another alternative to listening for the beep is to wait for 15-20 seconds then read it. It normally is very quick getting a reading. Hope this helps.

I keep getting readings that are about two degrees off. Is this normal?

My readings seem to be accurate. When I'm well, the reading is around the normal of 98.6. I have found that when using a temporal thermometer on my forehead, the readings are 1 to 2 degrees less than I get with an oral thermometer, and that is typical, so if you are comparing the readings from this oral thermometer with readings from a temporal thermometer, you can expect a similar discrepancy.

Any idea of the false positives and false negatives this instrument amassed in any studies the manufacturer may have partaken in?

I don't know but it didn't seem accurate at all and I returned it.
