Hum Aapke Hain Koun is a 1994 Hindi romantic-comedy film directed by Sooraj R Barjatya, with Madhuri Dixit and Salman Khan playing the lead roles. Grossing over Rs 1.35 billion, the film was one of the highest grossing Bollywood films in its time. Winning 5 filmfare awards and a National Award for Best Popular Film, Hum Aapke Hain Koun still has a cult following and is considered one of the most loved films of all time in Hindi cinema. The film is in essence a celebration of the glorious Indian wedding traditions as it follows the story of a married couple (Madhuri Dixit and Salman Khan) and their relationships with their families. Prem (Salman Khan) loses his parents while he was very young and lives with his Rajesh (Mohnish Bahl), his elder brother and Kailashnath (Alok Nath), his uncle. Rajesh runs the family business and his family is searching for a girl for him. Professor Siddharth Chaudhary (Anupam Kher), Kailashnath's friend. has 2 daughters; Pooja (Renuka Shahane) and Nisha (Madhuri Dixit). Rajesh's marriage is arranged with Pooja. During their meeting, the friendly banter between Prem and Nisha blossoms into love. As the film goes on, Pooja gets pregnant and Nisha is sent to help out with her sister's pregnancy. Romance and love blossom between Prem and Nisha during their time in the same house but, they decide to keep it a secret and wait for an appropriate time to tell their parents. Meanwhile Pooja discovers the love and offers her support in proposing marriage but tragedy strikes as Pooja meets with an accident and dies. During such a sad time, the two families decide to marry Nisha to Rajesh as she will make a good mother to Pooja's child. Prem and Nisha decide to give up their romantic affair for their family and go along with the families' decision. How will their life end is told in the rest of the movie.
