In the 1940s and 1950s, lacy crocheted doilies were at their peak in popularity. Frequently used to accent interior decor, these delicate cobwebs of finely worked threads could be made quickly and with little effort. Thread companies turned out thousands of inexpensive instruction booklets for needleworkers constantly looking for new ideas. Today, renewed interest in hand-crocheted items has once again created a demand for these elegantly simple ― and simply elegant ― doilies. With this eye-catching collection of patterns taken from now-rare thread company publications, modern needleworkers can re-create stunning designs for a variety of projects. Noted needlework authority Rita Weiss has selected 32 masterpieces in miniature that are as suitable for framing as they are for use as centerpieces, placemats, cushion covers, and much more. Patterns include the pansy doily, Spanish fan, morning glory, double ruffle doily, pineapple posy, ripe wheat runner, windmill wings, ring of roses, new daisy doily, sea foam, leafy spray, pinwheel trio, and twenty other exquisite motifs. This inexpensive and easy-to-follow guide also provides helpful tips for beginners―with abundant advice on selecting materials and working the pattern, as well as on the care and handling of heirloom pieces that will be passed on lovingly from generation to generation. Great crochet book!
Love the vintage crochet books and they are getting harder and harder to find. This is not really for beginners, but if you know how to crochet or want to expand your knowledge, this book is great. The patterns use stitches like "long trebles", 5 times over the hook, instead of the basic chain stitch in some of the patterns, but they are beautiful when done. Make sure you use the required size of thread though as some of these are made with very small. Fantastic addition to my "library".

Not for beginners
I love this book. I didn’t give it five stars because the patterns are difficult. They aren’t well written and need adjustments. I included pictures of my work. I hope you enjoy

The cover of the book has the best picture
The patterns are presented on one page which makes it easy to follow along. It would have been more helpful if the pictures were in color as a few of the patterns have colored thread. Also, color or crisper pictures would allow for better visual details of textured patterns. I was hoping the book included recent recreations of the doilies and color photos. I guess they found the original instructions and prints and just reprinted them. The best picture is on the cover of the book. The ones inside are a little dark and grainy.

Crochet filagree old fashioned
These were cute. I found them a little difficute and sometimes hard to understand the wording, but I made one doilie into a tablecloth for a small table with drop sides for a client...out of washable/dryable yarn! It turned out beautifully.
