A story of espionage and extremism the world's first secret service, and the terrorist threat they faced. The end of the 16th century England is a pariah state on the edge of a largely Catholic continent. For the protestant Queen Elizabeth I, the enemy is everywhere the Pope has given licence to kill her. This legion of threats demands a shadowy new army. And so the age of espionage begins. This is the story of the Cecils, the spymasters who ran the world's first secret service. Their counter-terrorist network reached into the very heart of the Catholic enemy, and they secured the Britain we know today. Includes subtitles for the Hard Of Hearing Review: Extremely interesting BBC documrntar - This DVD of the Spy master for the Queen was very interesting and suggestive to me. I clearly understand historical back ground of conspiracy against the Queen. Behind it, there was religious conflicts between Catholic and Protestant. This is a very effective textbook for viewers to be informed of how politics worked between the monarch and her subjects. Cecil’’s battle with their enemies in the court were very thrilling. The documentary sometimes is more enjoyable than films or TV dramas. BBC did a good job in making this splendid work! Noboru Review: You thought Big Brother just started watching you, think again. - Anyone who knows anything about Lizzy 1 knows she was a force to be reckoned with, when your Dad kills your Mom,then calls you a 'bastard',marries another woman, then another, and another, and another,it doesn't make you feel a happy bunny. She knew that so many people wanted her dead, why wouldn't she gather around her like minded people who would guard her against the forces of a religion who saw her as a weapon of the devil. This is an informative, retrospective view of a time when there was no grey, only black and white.I love the Tudors, but I don't know if I would have liked to live then..

Immerse yourself.
A little dated in production values but a fascinating tale well presented. Acting such that it keeps one engaged and absorbed.

That it is historically correct
To learn more about something I did not know all about. Fascinating and most of all, a true history

A fair portrayal, that's all
Can't say its the best I have seen of this period, but nevertheless worth a watch

Elizabethan Spy Masters
Amazing, this DVD shows how cunning and violent the Elizabethan era was and how the spy Masters would stop at nothing to infiltrate plots against Queen Elizabeth I and King James I harbour their reign. Beautifully documented by historians. I would completely recommend this DVD.

Mesmerising and informative
Great educational dvd for historians and non historians. Engaging, mesmerising and brilliantly filmed

not historically accurate on some points
This "historical" documentary is rather disappointing. It is biased and often inaccurate. For instance it implies, wrongly, that John Gerard (a jesuit priest) was responsible for the Gunpowder plot. It is historical trash. There isn't much finesse in the analysis.
