Changing the batteries didn't work... Flipping them around didn't work... but then I rubbed/cleaned the battery contacts and boom! Worked like a charm. The other issue is that the green and yellow dials are not intuitive as mentioned in other reviews when it comes to setting times but it becomes less of an issue the longer you use it. As far as what I got it for and how functional it is... Well, I am using it to help myself and patients maintain timeliness during appointments. With some prefacing and education, it has been well received by patients... both during the appointment and in how patients like being seen on time. It gives both auditory and visual queues that may be internalized at future encounters as it anecdotally appears Later visits are easier to maintain timeliness and we have time to spare to address other issues. Another physician recently bought one and we are looking at doing a quality review and patient survey. If it objectively shows improvements and good patient reviews, we may implement this in the whole clinic. Usually my four year old will always ask me "can I have 5 more minutes " or "can I do this in 5 minutes?" My answer is always yes! I set a timer on my phone to help transition between tasks. With him being four, he has no concept of time and it's a bit easier for him to understand when he can actually see it! The coolest thing about this timer is the warning setting! I can set this timer for 10 minutes and then set the 2nd timer/warning timer for 5 minutes, the timer turns yellow when it hits that 5 minute mark. It shows him how much time is left and he loves to race the timer to see who is faster! It's got a pretty good volume on it when it does go off, it doesn't get annoying by going off the whole time. After a few seconds, the timer stops and the light continues to flash red. UPDATED WITH GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE STORY! *by T***R on March 3, 2015* This timer does the job and the colors make it fun for kids. The ability to have two alerts is slick as you may want to have a 'you are getting close' warning and a 'you are done' alert. The main drawback is that it is really not very loud. We wanted to use this to help our 6 year old to manage their shower time a bit better. Unfortunately even when sitting on the edge of the tub the alert is not loud enough to hear with running water. UPDATE 3/23/2016: A little over a year after purchasing this it failed. The device would just shine the red light and nothing else worked. I contacted Learning Resources via email (DEmails@learningresources.com) and detailed the issue. Within a week I had a replacement sent FedEx. Talk about customer service!
