Radtel SMA-Female Dual Band Tactical Antenna 136-174/400-520Mhz Compatible with Baofeng Kenwood Radtel RT-900 RT-890 RT-4D RT-470 RT-470X and More (Foldable Tactical Antenna)

Although I wasn't necessarily a fan of these modern "tactical" (?) antennas that fold, it seemed like it was going to be better than the original antenna that came on my Radtel RT-490. I was not really impressed with it's receive or transmit and had hoped this might make a difference. Well, I'm impressed. After installing, I noticed immediate improvement in receive. Transmit seems much better although I haven't had any QSOs using this antenna just yet. But I gotta say the receive is so much better, even on air band. The ability to fold it is nice since it is long; you can still receive when folded but performance is much better unfolded. I strapped the included velcro to the antenna unfolded, so that it will always be there when I do want to fold it.

I thought this would extend the transmit and receive range on my Baofeng HT. The build quality is crummy. The O ring fell off as soon as I took it out of the package. And the rubber cap fell off the tip as well. But THE WORST thing is that this doesn't even work as an antenna! No reception, no transmit PERIOD. I couldn't understand why I was not getting reception from a local Repeater just 3 miles away. I was able to tune it on my Kenwood HT. I thought maybe the Baofeng radio wasn't working right and would have to return it. On a whim I took the ultra cheap rubber duck antenna out of the box and swapped it on my HT. PERFECT Reception and good transmit. FROM THE CHEAP ANTENNA that came with the Baofeng radio. I tossed this antenna in the trash. Total waste of money. The only thing it was good for was chasing my cats away from the dinner table. Utter junk. AVOID!

It folds using a pretty nifty snap design, it transmits, it receieves; it's lightweight, too!

It is a good antenna, i bought mostly for the look, but I have not seen any hindrance in my radio's performance.

Fits in my UV-5R8W and will most likely fit in your radio if your radio is SMA male. Receiving on the Radtel antenna also seems to be better than the ABBREE antenna that came with my UV-5R8W.

Immediate, stellar results on both range and clarity, even from a dense city like downtown Chicago.

I purchased this in hopes it would improve my transmit range just a bit. Whether it did that or not, I honestly cannot say. But what I can tell you is reception was almost non-existent. I had to remove the squelch setting in my radio to even hear ANY kind of response. What I heard was extreme static, as if there was no antenna attached at all. After reattaching the stock antenna, I was able to speak to someone via the repeater 12 miles out. Now you tell me whether this antenna is worth it or not. It came shipped folded in half and put inside the amazon padded envelope. It is possible being shipped like that damaged it, but I'm not about to bother trying to get another one. i will say that the quality of material seems pretty good, folds in either direction easily, though when you fold it it almost feel like you would break it that way.

I’ve had the opportunity to use it in the safety of my home quite satisfactorily, but I don’t know how it would work in a tactical environment. The tiny handheld I was using wasn’t equipped with the earplug & throat-mike or an update from the PRC-15 that the squads used, or the PRC-71s , that I was familiar with, but was amazed at the functionality, but dismayed at the power. Overall, I’m quite pleased with the Antenna. And I also bought it’s Bigger Brother!
