Excellent performance for a small size heater.
This Laguna power heater is excellent my 14foot wide pond is ice free even in this freezing cold NY weather. The Lagunga heater has a red LED light on top when powered so you know it's working. I also have an air rater running which help keep the water from freezing. I recommend this heater for any pond of 500 to 600 gallons and 3 feet deep in the center for KOI fish winter Hibernation.

Works great for my horses water trough.
This power heater works great in my indoor water trough for my horses. I can give them warm water in the freezing cold.

Didn't Work When Needed Most
We dug a pond in early October and to prepare for the winter, we decided to buy the Laguna PowerHeat De-Icer. We previously had the TetraPond De-icer in our old home, but left it behind when we moved. When we were having 30 degree weather in December, we would see the red light turn on and have peace of mind that is was working. Fast forward to January, where we arrived in single digits, this de-icer failed miserably. We had a dedicated 20A outlet for this and the pond filter, never having any issues up until this point with running them both. We woke up one day to our pond completely frozen over because this thing blew the GFCI circuit. As per the instructions, we plugged it into another GFCI to troubleshoot, and a short 10 seconds later, you could hear the outlet reset. In an attempt for a quick solution, we ordered the TetraPond De-icer and got it same day. After using a pot of hot water to melt a holt in the ice, we dropped the TetraPond in, and it has been working ever since. Considering Laguna De-icer is $30 more expensive and seems to lack durability, we're disappointed that we can no longer return it or get a refund.

Great warming light
Works just as I should. My fish love hanging out underneath it to keep warm. The light on the top is a big help to tell you if itโs working or not..

I guess it works?
In DC we just had our coldest stretch in years. The heater appears to have successfully kept a small hole in the ice and no fish died. I think it's not strong enough for my 1000 gal pond, but that's my fault and I'm not returning it.

New England pond never froze!
After three years of losing fish from toxic chemicals and lack of oxygen due to major icing I decided it was time to try a different route. My pond is 6X10 and about 2 feet deep so just shy of 1000 gallons. I timed my purchase because we were expecting about a week straight of temperatures below freezing. The pond did freeze over the night after I installed the heater but the water was already at 33 degrees. I was delighted to see a hole around the filter the next day after installing it. I was even more delighted to see the ice continue to retract over the days afterward. Even though my neighbor's pond froze solid my pond never did. I have been able to see my fish all winter to make sure they're doing well. We had 20โ; of snow fall last week. Even though the snow quickly covered the pond, this heater actually melted all of the snow in just 24 hours. I was under the impression that this was supposed to keep just a hole in the ice. Maybe it is just strong enough to keep a 6X10 (1000 gallon or less) pond above freezing in a typical southern New England winter. Either way I'm very happy. I hope it lasts! May, 2019 Update: Three years of super performance! I was amazed that my pond never froze in January 2018 when we had over two weeks of temperatures that never broke 32. Nights were typically down to below 0. Want to know a real kicker? I never disconnected my waterfall for the winter of 2017 and 2018! No ice dams. No frozen water whatsoever. And here is a bonus for everyone: leave your heater in your pond right through April. All that awful string algae that would normally grow when the temperatures begin to rise...gone! I had to investigate this more and learned that the heater helps get the temperature of the water high enough to allow the good bacteria to colonize quickly. That means that the algae has nothing to feed on. This spring my water has been crystal clear. I disconnected the heater in early May. Iโm buying a second unit as a backup since this thing has been so useful. Iโd give it ten stars if I could.

Very good unit
This is my forth one. I had one for four years. Worked great but when I put it in this year it kept tripping GFC. I bought a back-up in 2023. Tossed the one I had problems with and put in back-up one. Very cold winter this year but was working well for 2 months. I moved it to open another hole and it quit working. Laguna has no answers. I ordered another one in a panic. Bought a different one at a store to open a hole before new one came. I put new one in too when I got it. we will see. love the red light but wonder how long this one will last. Might have to try a different brand

Stood up to a Michigan winter
Great heater for a small to medium size pond. This unit kept my pond from freezing over and gave the adequate size hole in the ice so my koi survived the winter. I am in Michigan and it gets very cold for extended periods. This heater was great with the light to show that it was working. You just plug it in and the extra long cord helps with making it easy to install. The unit up stood the entire winter and was great. I am very happy with the value and quality for the price.

Quality
Works great. I like the red light that tells me when it is on. Clears a large area of ice. Well constructed with a heavy electrical cord that has a great amount of footage to reach an electrical outlet. Highly recommend this product.

Product cracked and leached into my pond
The reviews were great and product worked, as in it did keep a small hole open through the winter. I was surprised at how small it was compared to pictures I had seen of the product online. Today I unplugged it and removed the heater from the pond to switch out for a skimmer. I noticed rust staining and also a visible crack in the heater as I was cleaning it up to put away for the season. It was not dropped. The return window is closed. First and last Laguna product I will ever buy. Should have stuck with Aquascape. Very disappointed and a huge waste of 100.00. Don't waste your time and money on this product. Coincidentally, my pond started foaming a week ago. This has never happened before which makes me wonder if it was caused by whatever was leaching out of the heater. You can hear water in the heater if you shake it. Junk. Update May 17, 2023. I contacted Laguna directly as the heater has a one year warrantee. Their technical team advised that the damage was caused by an accident and not covered. The original shipping box had no damage and I did not have an accident and drop the heater. I have ordered a new metal Aquascape heater for this winter. Aquascape stands behind their products unlike Laguna. Do not buy this product.

Finally one that works
Works really well. Currently -20C here and keeps a nice little hole open in my fish pond.

Works well. Poor design for thermal control ON/OFF
Let me start by saying this heater seems to be one of the better designs out there, but not perfect. It does a good job of staying level. It melts surrounding ice well. I like the added hook for aeration hose to keep the bubbler and heater close to each other. The only problem is it never turns off. Not sure where the temp sensor is on the heater but it seems like its not in the right spot as this heater will melt the entire pond surface. Granted my fish pond is smaller, but I would expect the power to cycle once a 4-6 inch area has been melted. Looks like I will need to add a timer to restrict it from running 24/7.

Lasted 1 year
We had an aquascape heater for ice protection in our pond (12โ x 12โ x2.5โ) and it died after 2 years. This one is half the price and is doing a good job of keeping the ice at bay. Weโll see when it gets to -20 but Iโm optimistic it will work. The only issue is longevity. Keeping my fingers crossed. / The second winter. Nuts!! It didnโt work this year and I did keep it in a dry warm place in basement.
